However, several are still hanging on and offer up a great a backdrop for the westbound Zephyr. This is the last Monday the Zephyr will run for the foreseeable future as Amtrak has chosen to change all long distance trains to run three days a week instead of daily! The train was tied down here overnight and, for some reason, the original leader was removed. This morning, UP 1943 was brought out of North Yard by a new crew. Not sure what happened to the previous leader, but for whatever reason, it was removed from the train here at Rocky. Once tied on, the conductor will start to knock off brakes on the train so the train can proceed west. Note the incredible levels of smoke currently filling the sky from nearby forest fires. It now will wait for DS-80 to throw the switch and flag the unit back east in to the siding and onto the MNYGJ, currently tied down on the siding. UP 1943, sitting on the main, will be the new leader for the manifest. The crew is currently working to link these two units as DPUs to UP 1943. I last saw it almost exactly a year prior to this shot when it led a passenger special on the Moffat at the end of September 2019. So it was extra special when BNSF ran a coal empty west up and around Big Ten on this September afternoon. All six units are on the head end for the trip west. The train is moving at track speed as it leaves west out of Rocky and makes the climb up Big Ten Loop. This particular coal empty actually originated in Mexico. Once there, this Grand Junction-based crew will head to the local hotel for rest. Most likely, they'll return to Grand Junction tomorrow on the Denver-Provo.
