A westbound until coil train is traversing Soldier Summit. The train has four C44-9CW's (all four in Heritage-II paint), and all four in "elephant style", even though the train was separating the first two from the last two.

Snow highlights the mountains in the background as the eastbound Stockton to Denver winds through the loops on Gilluly on main two. The two units seen here are actually two unmanned helpers at the end of the train.

Although this train could easily be mistaken for a southbound heading toward the camera, these "pumkins" are actually the helpers on the end of a northbound coal empty approaching Greenland.

This BNSF southbound coal load is wrapping around the south side of Palmer Lake. Prior to the advent of DPU, the train would soon be stopping to cutoff its manned helper from the end of the train.

A few miles north of Palmer Lake, the Santa Fe mainline once crossed over the Rio Grande mainline prior to the existance of the Joint Line. Here, this southbound coal load is descending from the level of the old Santa Fe main to the level of the old Rio Grande main.

An interesting mix of power - BNSF Warbonnet 4719, BNSF Green SD40-2s 7884 and 8004, and faded BNSF H2 4480 - leads this eastbound BNSF manifest through Tabernash.

The last train picture I ever took with my Minolta Dimage 5 camera. The day after this picture was taken, my Canon D60 arrived. This picture is somehow fitting, don't you think?

On the night of September 6, two tank cars on the BNSF Golden Spur ran away east through Arvada. At C&S Junction, the place where the Golden Spur ends and joins with the Moffat Road, the tank cars derailed and flew down an embankment. In the process, they took out a switch and two block signals (as well as a Chevy S-10 in a parking lot on the ground!). Fortunately, nobody was hurt. The next day, one of the two tank cars lay less than 200 feet from Federal Blvd, trucks missing from the bottom! With the mainline reopened, a BNSF manifest creeps by in the background.

The MDENSTO pushes west on the main at Pinecliff, CO. Behind me when taking this picture, the Ski Train is actually patiently waiting for this westbound to clear.

A BNSF manifest, the MDENSTO, creeps west on a yellow signal on main one at the siding of Kyune. Main two is on the far right, and the siding itself is a "center siding", running in between the two mainlines.

On main two, a UP coal load works its way west up the steep 2% grade, while on main one, a BNSF manifest runs parallel to the coal load, attempting to overcome the same grade. Interesting watching two trains "race" up Soldier Summit!

One of the BNSF trains that regularly runs over UP trackage rights across the Utah desert is the MSTODEN (Stockton to Denver). Here, the train is clipping along at 55 MPH as it highballs the appropriately named siding of Desert.
