UP 1352 was the last Rio Grande GP40-2 in the 30xx number range to get a patch. It's already been nearly two years, but UP 1352 was DRGW 3097 not long ago. On this Sunday, the geep was sitting shutdown in the yard at La Salle.

At the time of this picture, I wondered when I would see UP 1989 again. UP decided that after this event, the Heritage Units would enter into general revenue service, not necessarily along home rails.

I learned recently that the four strips along the back of the Rio Grande Heritage Unit were something of a last minute decision. A good decision they were too! Here, you can see the decals on UP 1989 that respond brightly to a flash!

Ever wondered what happened to the Rio Grande (Standard Gauge) caboose 01511? You can find here, now privately owned, in tow in Silverton. The caboose has been joined with an ATSF caboos on one end.

Union Pacific still keeps a Rio Grande Jordan Spreader (AX-45) on-hand up in Phippsburg...just in case! I'm not sure how long the spreader has sat in P-Burg tied down, but I suspect it has been awhile since it saw any action.

This GP40-2 is without a doubt my personal favorite on Union Pacific's roster. Why? It was the very first Rio Grande unit (GP40-2 or otherwise) to be patched and added to UP's roster. UP 5234 started life as DRGW 3122. In 1997, the unit was given a patch and renumbered to UP 5245. Here, ten years later, the unit still retains the same number and leads the Landmark Local west through Fruita on its way to Mack for some switching.

In the last few minutes of direct sunlight, we look at the sillouhette of the signal at the east switch of Sagers. It is 8:20pm as the sun sets behind the Book Cliffs.

The Rio Grande Heritage Unit sits near the silos at Utah Junction. After arriving on the MPUNY the night before, the power (which included UP 1989) cut away from the train and moved up into the storage yard for the duration of the day.

With paint that is still in pretty good shape, UP 1344 sits on the bridge over 38th Street in UP's 36th Street Yard. The shot was taken from the Blake Street bridge, also running over 38th Street.

Once a day, UP runs a transfer train between BNSF's 31st Street Yard and UP's 36th Street Yard. On this morning, UP 1344 and UP 1480 were in charge of moving the cars from 31st Street to 36th Street.

Fortunately, you can still run across former Rio Grande units even in 2007. While DRGW 5371 is the only remaining Rio Grande unit left, there are many units that have only been patched that still roam the rails. Here, UP 1344 is on a transfer train headed to BNSF's 31st Street Yard from UP's 36th Street Yard.

On their way into 36th Street Yard, these units are approaching York Street. Note the numbers on the units...UP 1348 and UP 1349! The units are former Rio Grande GP40-2's, DRGW 3126 and DRGW 3128 respectively. The units were both Rio Grande as recently as April 2005.

For the past month or so, UP 1901 (ex-DRGW 3155) has been hanging out in the Denver area, running on a few locals. The unit was spotted on the ready track on the west side of North Yard on this April evening.
