"UP 1422, leaving Leyden on an advanced approach". The West Local, with a pair of covered hoppers, is leaving Leyden after meeting one westbound. The train will diverge from the Main to Main 2 to Arvada, and then the North Yard Siding at C&S Junction. It will enter the Storage Yard at the north end of North Yard to spot the cars before calling it a day.

The westbound Denver-Provo is about to knock down a signal and take the siding at Leyden. UP's eastbound West Local has completed its work on the Rocky Spur and is now headed back toward North Yard.

A relatively short (and relatively light) Denver-Provo just has three units for power today. No DPUs on the tail end. The train is approaching a diverging approach (red over yellow) signal at East Leyden. The train will take the siding to meet two eastbounds.

Man, I sure wouldn't mind having one of these houses in the neighborhood of Leyden Rocky! Great view of the Moffat, including a trio of GP40-2s accelerating west toward Rocky (and the Rocky Spur). The yellow Penske truck you see is on CO-72.

None of these three GP40-2s started life as Union Pacific. The first two (UP 1422 and UP 1425) both once wore scarlet and gray and were on Espee's roster. The third unit (UP 1370) is of Missouri Pacific ancestry! The three geeps are the power on the West Local and are headed for the Rocky Spur.

Just three lonely geeps making the trip west out of Leyden under some dynamic, cloudy skies. The train...err, engines...are headed for the Rocky Spur to pickup a couple cars at the aggregate plant at the west end.

A trio of GP40-2s head west out of Leyden. They are the West Local for the day! Crazy how, at one point, this local needed four engines for all the cars it had. Today, it is going west with nothing.

Winds are changing rapidly on this morning, blowing low-laying clouds in and out around the tracks at Plain. Two minutes before the Zephyr showed up, I couldn't see the trees on the far side of the tracks! But the wind actually blew out just enough of the clouds to create a great atmosphere for the on-time Zephyr.

Zephyr in the Mist! It was an interesting weather morning in the Denver-Metro area and along the Front Range as the westbound Zephyr moves in and out of low-laying clouds at the east end of Plain.

Light is rapidly vanishing from the sky as a BNSF Provo-Denver sits at a red signal in the siding at Leyden. The train has actually been here for about five hours. BNSF had "no room at the inn", holding the train out here at Leyden until some space could be made. A new crew is onboard now, but DS-86 will get the eastbound Zephyr around the train before getting it a light to continue east.

UP's eastbound rail train had a Norfolk Southern SD60E in the consist! A rare visitor to Colorado, this was original a (standard cab) SD60 that Norfolk Southern rebuilt at its Altoona, PA shops. In addition to adding a wide cab, the unit received some electrical upgrades as well.

This empty rail train departed Provo, UT a day earlier. It came off the LA&SL (via UP's Sharp Sub) and the came east over the Grande. I did not think I was going to get any shots of it because it didn't leave Bond until 12:40pm. This time of year, I figured there was no chance it would reach the Front Range before sunset. But with green signals the entire trip, it made amazing time and was at Leyden by 5pm!

Late in the afternoon, an empty eastbound rail train rolls down the main at Leyden. Amazingly, the train has an all-EMD consist! Not too often you find a quartet of EMD power these days.

A visitor from the north...sort of...In 1998, Canadian National purchased the Illinois Central railroad. However, CN still identifies the former IC units on its roster. This C40-8W is one of only 42 such units Illinois Central had. Although it now wears standard Canadian National colors, a small "IC" is painted on the cab, indicating the heritage of the unit.
