This MNYRO has six units on the head end and another two DPU'd on the back. That is because the train is roughly 9,000 feet in length. That has been UP's philosophy lately with the manifests between Denver and Roper. Instead of running them six days a week, they are running them three days a week, but doubling their length. Getting the north side of a train lit here at West Leyden is possible between (roughly) April 10th and August 20th. The rest of the year, the sun is too far to the south to light the scene. The train has a trio of brand new SD70ACe-T4s on the head end. These units are compliant with the EPA's Tier-4 standards for emissions. It has taken EMD several years to develop these units! When UP added a second main between C&S Jct and Arvada, they basically added another siding, when needed, west of Denver. In 2001, they received six MK5000Cs. These unique units were rebuilds by Morrison Knudsen. In 2003, their MK prime movers were replaced with EMD prime movers and they were redesignated as MK50-3s. At the end of 2016, Utah Railway lost their last coal contract and a century of coal hauling for the railroad came to an end. The fifth unit is a Utah Railway MK50-3. These units time on Utah Railway have come to an end and they are being sent to the KYLE Railroad in eastern Colorado and western Kansas. The new pole is the one that appears to be coming out of the "Leyden" control box. I am guessing these poles relate to PTC as UP works to implement PTC on its mainlines.
