As you can see here, there is a hill east of Denver on the Brush Sub that this westbound coal load has just climbed over. All 29 SD70ACes, as well as the rest of MRLs power, transferred over to BNSF ownership at the start of 2024 after BNSF bought out the contract with MRL. The contract was formed in 1987 and was originally signed for 60 years, set to expire in 2047. With increasing traffic on BNSF's norther Transcon, BNSF wanted to reclaim possession of the MRL. Both railroads came to agreement on the terms, and the STB approved the early contract termination in March 2023. On January 1, 2024, the MRL ceases to exist, with all assets absorbed by BNSF. It is not entirely clear why the train is currently stopped. In the distance, you can see the headlight of an approaching westbound coal load that will overtake the manifest. Unlike UP, which has moved all but the most minor of maintenance out of Denver, BNSF still does some more substantial maintenance on engines here in Denver. A pair of BN (yes...patched BNSF...but still Cascade Green) switching together on a yard job at 31st Street. Note the second unit might, at first glance, appear to be a GP30. And, it did indeed start life as exactly that. However, BNSF no longer has any "true" GP30s left on the roster. They have all been rebuilt and this unit is now designated as a GP39-3. BNSF took control of MRL at the start of 2024. Since then, the MRL power has been scattered across the BNSF system, being assigned to trains like any other BNSF unit. Yes, this is indeed a coal empty running east on the Moffat. The train unloaded coal at the power plant in Valmy, NV. The train runs over the Moffat as BNSF has no trackage rights on UP's Overland Route. It will proceed to the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, load up, and head back to Valmy, running west (loaded) over the Moffat. The train is waiting for a fresh crew to come out of Denver to take it the rest of the way in. A substantial snow storm, the third since Monday, has moved in and has started to dump was is expected to be 8 to 10 inches of snow in the next 24 hours! The manifest is right around 4,000 feet long. Most BNSF manifest are, on average, right around a mile long. The scene is a cool mix of fall and winter mixed together as many trees and shrubs still retain their red and yellow leaves. It has been a few years since this much snow has fallen in early November.
