It is a great place, particularly in the summer months, to get westbound with decent lighting in the morning. Part of the grade crossing is currently broken, so there is a standing "XH" order at the crossing. This means trains must go slow enough to stop if a car darts out in front of them. Here at Denver, there is a crew change. The crew getting off the train has been on since Lincoln, NE. The new crew will take the train to Grand Junction, CO. Once the train clears the switch, the conductor will re-align the switch, and the train will continue in to the station. The train is technically on Main 2, with Main 1 over to the right of the frame. The nose of AMTK 18 is actually in Yard Limits and out of CTC. AMTK 174 experienced some mechanical issues, so the BNSF unit was added to the point in Denver. Now, running about four hours late, the train approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. Three hours were lost in the mid-west due to severe thunderstorms and flood warnings. In Denver, BNSF 4762 was added to the point as AMTK 174 was suffering from some mechanical issues. The dam is being raised by nearly 200 feet, and will triple the capacity of the reservoir. The reservoir is one of the primary sources of drinking water for Denver. Amtrak has increased the pricing for hauling private cars and also reduced the number of stations from which they are willing to pick up or drop off the cars. As a result, private cars have become something of a rarity on the Zephyr. This morning, however, the Bella Vista dome car did indeed show up on the journey west.
