It's always great to get a bit deeper into Spring, it is always great to have late running later in the day, allowing for some daylight shots of the eastbound Zephyr as it descends toward Denver. Here, running almost exactly on time, the eastbound Zephyr rolls through the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive.

Partly cloud skies result in a patchwork of shadows being cast around the area of Blue Mountain Drive. The head end of the eastbound Zephyr is in the sunlight while most of the rest of the train is still cast in shadows.

Amtrak now has three Phase 7 P42DCs (AMTK 174, AMTK 82, and AMTK 138). AMTK 138 is the newest repaint in the new scheme, and it along with AMTK 82 led the Zephyr westbound out of Denver. This is the first time a patched pair of Phase 7 P42DCs have led the Zephyr (or, to the best of my knowledge, any train).

The morning Zephyr, with a pair of Phase 7 P42DCs, heads west alongside the Sheridan Blvd commuter rail station. The Zephyr has what has become standard consist. A transition sleeper, two regular sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and two coaches.

With temperatures right around 60°F (15°C) and crystal clear blue skies, it is a wonderful day along the Front Range. A P42DC and a P40DC (which has since been rebuilt as a P42DC) lead the westbound Zephyr in the middle of the Tunnel District. The train is approaching the east portal of Tunnel 7.

For me, Amtrak's Phase 3 scheme, which dominated through the 1980s and early 1990s on the F40PHs, is my favorite of all of Amtrak's paint scheme. The new Phase 7 scheme has become second place for me. Phase 7 unseated the original Phase 1 scheme from second place. I always enjoyed the Pointless Arrow in particular. Which scheme was your favorite? Leave a comment and let everyone know! AMTK 161, the Phase 1 Heritage unit, leads the westbound Zephyr on a very pleasant April morning.

I really love seeing an Amtrak heritage unit leading on any Amtrak train. A wonderful "flash from the past". AMTK 161, the Phase 1 Heritage P42DC reminds me of the very early days of Amtrak when SDP40s wearing the Pointless Arrow scheme ruled on long distance trains.

The westbound Zephyr is just about to poke its nose out of Tunnel 3. Savvy Amtrak fans might note that the "Amtrak" on the nose is not the normal one on Phase 5 units. This is indeed AMTK 161, the Phase 1 Heritage unit sporting the bloody nose and classic Amtrak font.

As the westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 2 in the Lower Tunnel District, we see the west portal of Tunnel 3 in the foreground, from which the Zephyr will also emerge from in less than a minute.

The westbound Zephyr heads west on the North Yard siding, passing by a UP manifest that is spanning Main 3 and Main 2 through the crossover at Pecos. The manifest arrived earlier in the day from the Greeley Sub. It came across Main 2 and, now that the Zephyr is clear, will back in to North Yard.

AMTK 126 approaches the signal bridge at Pecos Street, running on the North Yard Siding. You may notice that there does not appear to be a signal over the North Yard siding. That is indeed correct. There are CTC crossovers from Main 3 to Main 2 to Main 1 at Pecos. But there is no CTC-controlled crossover from the siding to Main 3, so this is not a control point on the siding.
