BNSF recently picked up a contract to deliver Power River Basin coal to Valmy, NV. The loaded coal trains run west over the Moffat. They run with three units on the head end and three units on the tail end. Here, the three DPUs have found morning sun as they disappear toward the west end of Tolland.

The sun has not yet peeked over the mountain here at Tolland, but it is definitely up and it is definitely lighting up the clouds to the east. Meanwhile, a BNSF coal load runs on the main amidst fantastic fall colors.

On a glorious October morning, a westbound BNSF coal load slowly pulls through a damp scene with fall colors still in force at Tolland. The mix of clouds and sun was just perfect!

Five minutes before 7am finds a westbound BNSF coal load, headed for Valmy, NV, slowly climbing the grade in the canyon between Rollins and Tolland. The sun has technically broken the horizon, but has not yet peeked over the mountains.

BNSF does not have trackage rights on UP's Greeley Sub. This lone BNSF ES44C4 must be a lease unit, but it is interesting that it is sitting off the main on one of the lead tracks for Vestas, manufacturer of wind turbines.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver is tied down in the siding at Rocky, awaiting a recrew to come out and take it in to Denver. The train tied down about an hour earlier and will actually sit here for next 26 hours when a crew is available to take it in to the yard.

A northbound BNSF manifest has a fresh crew and is untying in the siding of Rosenberg. Once the crew is ready to go and the UP train in the background is clear, the UP dispatcher will get a signal for the train to proceed north out of the siding and across the UP diamond, continuing north on the Galveston Subdivision.

A top-down view of the interlocking at Rosenberg / Tower 17 in Rosenberg, TX. In this shot, a BNSF manifest is move from right to left, going from the UP's Glidden Sub to the BNSF Galveston Sub. BNSF trains also cross the diamond in the shot, remaining entirely on the Galveston Sub. Likewise, UP trains cross the diamond on the other track on the Glidden Sub, and KCS trains cross the diamond, but take the diverging route on the left side of the shot toward Mexico.

There is a lot that happens at Rosenberg, TX, also known as Tower 17. UP's Glidden Sub (originally part of SP's Sunset Route) meets with BNSF's Galveston Sub and BNSF train, such as this one, move from trackage rights on UP's Glidden Sub on to their own tracks on the Galveston Sub. The Galveston Sub also continues on the right side of the shot toward Galveston, TX. Then, in the foreground at the switch, the KCS Rosenberg Sub starts, branching off from UP's Glidden Sub, heading south toward Mexico.

But here, they must turn on to their own tracks. Traffic in the background is undisturbed by the train on the 1st Street overpass.

Prior to the days of PTC, signals that were approach lit would remain dark (shut off) until there was a train in the block approaching the signal. However, with the advent of PTC, signals will now light up just as soon as the dispatcher aligns a route through them. Such is the case at West Cliff (CP DS038) as we see a clear (green over red) signal set up for the eastbound Zephyr, still 90 minutes away.

Additionally, take note of the switch here at West Cliff. For a long time, this switch was set up as a "Y", meaning both the main and the siding slightly curved away from the single main track. However, UP has reconfigured the switch so the main is straight through the entire switch.

This BNSF coal load is stopped in the siding at Cliff and will be waiting here for the next 90 minutes or so, waiting for the eastbound Zephyr which is currently between Granby and Winter Park. The dispatcher did not want to risk trying to get the train up to Rollins ahead of Amtrak.
