Even though this MGJNY is not especially long, the train still has six units on the head end and a single DPU on the tail end. The train passes by the metal beast that has been rumored is scheduled for demolition.

An SD70ACe leads five GEs on the point of the Grand Junction to North Yard manifest. The head end is passing by Chem Spur, which hasn't been used in over a decade. Indeed, UP removed the frog for the turnout almost a decade ago. It's a little surprising they haven't removed the entire turnout.

Six UP units lead the thrice-weekly MGJNY. The train is about 4,200 feet in length, with quite a few coal loads mixed into the train. Astute observers will note five covered hoppers in the distance, on the plateau above Barbara's Gulch. These cars are sitting on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead near both CO-93 and CO-72.

Just west of the west switch of Rocky, the morning Zephyr is running on time as it works to climb the grade on Big Ten Curve. AMTK 187, sporting Amtrak's Phase 7 paint scheme, is on the point for the journey to Emeryville, CA.

The morning Zephyr is viewed from the north side of the rails at Rocky as it approach the turnout to the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead, seen climbing the 8% grade up the hill to the left. There are a lot of clouds on this mostly overcast morning, allowing for some shots from the usually shady side of the tracks.

The Winter Park Express has expanded service, currently running with seven coaches and a sightseer/lounge car. The train is just over 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) above sea level here at East Portal, in the middle of a frozen winter wonderland. The Continental Divide is snow-covered, the peaks in the background are around 13,000 feet (almost 4,000 meters) above sea level. The train just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel, and is running right on time for its journey back to Denver.

In the midst of the blue hour, the Winter Park Express Ski Train has emerged from the Moffat Tunnel and is headed east on a clear (green) signal. As you can see, we are definitely stuck in the dead of winter hear at 9,000 feet above sea level.

This westbound Denver-Provo manifest is (and has been) stuck in the siding at Tolland for quite awhile. The train met an eastbound BNSF oil train, waited for the Moffat Tunnel to vent, then waited for the Winter Park Express (that is what it is waiting for now). After that, the tunnel had to vent again, before the train departed west to meet the Zephyr at Winter Park.

A trio of SD70ACes bring up the tail end of this eastbound BNSF (loaded) unit oil train. I have had people ask why there isn't a buffer car between the end DPUs on the train (like on the head end). The reason is because the buffer car is primarily used to protect the crew. With no crew on the DPUs, a buffer car is not required.

A pair of GEs, a C44-9W and an ES440AC, bring up the tail end of this eastbound Provo-Denver manifest as it crosses Indiana Street at the west end of Leyden. BNSF manifests on the Moffat frequently consist of more tank cars than anything else, and today is no exception.

DS-378 has set up a nice meet here at Rocky between the westbound California Zephyr and an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The conductor on the Provo-Denver is just climbing down off the head end in order to give a roll by to the Zephyr. There isn't a cloud in the sky, which is resulting in slightly colder temperatures, right around 20°F (-7°C) at the moment.

Just west of Tunnel 1, AMTK 75 and AMTK 146 lead the Winter Park Express westbound. This season, with the train running five days a week, AMTK 75 will lead westbound on Friday and Sunday for one week, then least westbound on Thursday, Saturday, Monday the next. So both units will be on the point (on varying days) eastbound and westbound.
