After roughly nine months with no specially painted Amtrak units on the Zephyr, we actually got two in two days! Today, AMTK 160 wearing the "Pepsi Can" scheme is leading the train west out of Eisele (Clay).

The westbound Zephyr ran in to a pretty serious delay between Princeton, IL and Galesburg, IL the previous day. The Zephyr lost nearly four hours between the two cities. It lost some more time on the journey west, and ultimately departed Denver roughly five hours late. The train makes its way through Eisele (Clay) on the main track.

AMTK 160 leads the westbound Zephyr around Big Ten Curve. AMTK 160 is sporting a heritage paint scheme traditionally referred to as the "Pepsi Can" paint scheme. The 20 P32-8s that Amtrak purchased in 1991 were painted in this scheme as a bit of a variation on the Phase 3 scheme.

When Amtrak first released their Heritage units, AMTK 184 wore the Phase 4 heritage scheme. In 2023, AMTK 184 went to Beech Grove, Amtrak's maintenance facility. When it emerged, it was again wearing the traditional Phase 5 scheme. However, a few months later, AMTK 164 was released, now wearing the Phase 4 heritage scheme. Here, AMTK 164 is second out on the westbound Zephyr.

The Zephyr is right on time as it charges west between Leyden and Rocky, approaching Barbara's Gulch. For the first time in about nine months, there is a heritage unit running on the Zephyr. AMTK 164, the Phase 4 heritage unit, is second out on the train this morning.

The rails just barely show through the foot of fresh snow that has blanketed the terrain. The snow came it fast and furious yesterday, dropping that foot of snow in roughly 9 hours.

The morning Zephyr has an extra transition sleeper positioned between the power and the baggage car. The transition sleeper is being moved to California, possibly for the Coast Starlight. Or perhaps to replace a car already out there. Not entirely clear why it is there, but it makes for an interesting consist for sure.

A major storm rolled through the Denver area yesterday, dropping roughly a foot of snow in the area! This morning, there is a major fog layer from a temperature inversion out to the east. Meanwhile, the westbound Zephyr charges west out of Leyden, passing by the new Arvada neighbor of Leyden Rock.

The westbound Zephyr has the typical winter consist of two units, a baggage car, and seven Superliners head west in Barbara's Gulch, passing by the intermediate signal at MP 16.1. Above and in the distance, you can clearly see Tunnel 1, where the Zephyr will be in just a matter of minutes.

1 hour and 15 minutes behind the Winter Park Express, the westbound California Zephyr is making track speed as it passes by an RV storage lot. This lot used to be part of Mesa Oil, which left the property about a decade ago.

Passenger aboard the Winter Park Express are preparing for a day (or possibly weekend) of skiing in the Colorado High Country. Seats on the four coaches are sold to passengers, but the lounge car seats are not sold, and passengers are free to come and sit on a first come, first serve basis.

The westbound Winter Park Express rolls by the location of what used to be Mesa Oil. You can see the rusted out tanks behind the train. Mesa Oil needed to be served by a local twice a week. After UP decided to reduce the West Local down to one day a week, despite Mesa Oil stating they needed it twice, Mesa Oil moved to a new location in Denver. The old industry is now abandoned, and an RV storage facility has taken over much of the land.

You can see the progress that crews are making to clean up the derailment of the eastbound California Zephyr. A sleeper is being carried above the rails (what is left of them, in places), taking it back to the rest of the train. The transition sleeper, whose front truck derailed, will be taken next.

You can see the massive response of manpower and machines that have come to this location just east of Keensburg to rerail and cleanup a tragic derailment of the eastbound Zephyr. The train struck a semi at a grade crossing out of the frame to the left. The train was at track speed, about 79 MPH, when the semi was struck. The engineers in the lead unit were reported injured and taken to a hospital. There were no reports of any serious injuries amongst the crew.

Crews are working to "carry" an Amtrak sleeper east over the torn up track of a derailment that occurred roughly 10 hours earlier when the Zephyr struck a semi at a grade crossing. The haulers will carry the car east, back where the main track is still intact and place the sleeper on the rails.
