At least once per day, UP comes to 31st Street from 36th Street to drop off and pick up interchange cars. Likewise, BNSF heads to North Yard from 31st Street to do the same. BNSF 9150 is one of newest units (an SD70ACe) on BNSF's roster. The unit was delivered this year and has EMDs "Whisper Cab". BNSF 520 is a badly faded B40-8W. Having been raised on the Rio Grande, I'm definitely an EMD railfan and I always enjoy seeing a solid EMD consist. The two SD70M's are less than ten years old and the SD40-2's turn 30 this month! Such was the case on this Saturday afternoon. UP 1203 started life as a Kennecott Copper GP39-2 (KCC 782) in January 1977. It 1984, it was sold to Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT 383) until it joined UP's roster in 1991. It is still wearing its original UP paint scheme, although it was renumbered from UP 2353 in June 2003. EMD 3 was involved in a collision at a grade crossing a few days earlier. Note that the plow is missing from the unit and there is some pretty good damage around and above the anti-climber! The unit shove coal trains through the rotary tilt. Apparently it is having some problems though and has been (temporarily) replaced by a UP unit. UP 9872 started life as DRGW 5407 many years ago. Now, the "Rio Grande" on the conductors side of the long hood is almost gone (and it is completely gone on the right side). The unit had been sitting in Burnham for the past four months and was seen here at the 36th Street Yard. The writing on the fuel tank says "Running from the answer brings us no closer to the truth". Case-in-point is this southbound coal load just getting ready to leave the yard in Denver and head for the Joint Line. It is becoming increasingly hard to find one, and I was lucky to have stumbled across SP 319 as the second unit on the CNANX-01. The train came from the North Antelope Mine and is now waiting for its crew near Fox Junction. It is ultimately headed for the Nixon power plant near Colorado Springs.
