The valley that the Moffat Tunnel is located in has a wonderful mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. A pair of SD70ACes are the DPUs bringing up the tail end of this westbound BNSF manifest, disappearing in to the tunnel that runs underneath a shoulder of James Peak.

The crew on BNSF 5781 is just moments away from experiencing 15-20 minutes of dark as the train enters the Moffat Tunnel. The train is approaching the highest active Class 1 mainline in the country. The apex of the tunnel is 9,239 feet above sea level.

The Denver-Provo is on the main at East Portal and is approaching a clear (green) signal to go in to the 6.2 mile long tunnel. The building in the background was built by UP in 2010 as a weather safe facility for MOW equipment.

Halfway through the month of September and there is only very minor change in the deciduous trees at East Portal. When fall colors are in full effect, this scene is going to look even more spectacular!

Just east of the east switch of East Portal, BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest is approaching a clear (green) signal. The train is snaking its way along Rollins Road. In the distance, you can see the classic yellow schoolhouse that is a fixture in Tolland.

The two most common units you'll find on BNSF trains on the Moffat are ES44ACs and SD70ACes. This is an example of the latter. The orange is a bit darker than on the ES44ACs that it is stuck in between.

Near the east end of Leyden, an eastbound BNSF manifest is holding the main at Leyden. The exact reason for stopping was not apparent as the train had an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the east end of Leyden. Meanwhile, a rather significant thunderstorm has formed over the Rockies and is moving out on to the plains in the distance.

Greeley (UP) Union Pacific, BNSF
The Suncor Oil Refinery in Commerce City was built around and in between the BNSF Brush Sub and the UP Greeley Sub. A pretty smart way to build it, actually, as it give the refinery access to two railroads for moving product. Of course, when the refinery was built, what is now the BNSF Brush Sub was actually the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy (CB&Q) mainline to Denver from Chicago. Two mergers later (Burlington Northern, and then BNSF), and it is now the BNSF Brush Sub. The UP track, on the other hand, has been UP for all but 10 years of its life. It was originally built by the Denver Pacific Railway in 1870. Ten years later, in 1880, UP bought the Denver Pacific, gaining a direct line to Denver from Cheyenne.

In the shot here, a BNSF local sits on the Brush Sub (to the right) while a UP local sits on the Greeley Sub (to the left), both waiting their turn to cross the diamond where the two subdivisions intersect.

Yard Shots BNSF
A look at BNSF's yard in Denver. Most of the tracks in the shot are a part of yard limits, and under the jurisdiction of the yardmaster. However, the three tracks on the right of the yard (not including RTDs Commuter Rail tracks) are all CTC and under the jurisdiction of the Brush Subdivision Dispatcher in Ft Worth, TX.
