Yard Shots BNSF
An overview of BNSF's engine facility in Denver on a sunny Tuesday morning. Even in 2023, it is still not uncommon to find patched BN or ATSF units that still bear their green and black or blue and yellow colors. Not the case today, however, as the scene is entirely dominated by the BNSF orange that has been the standard for decades.

While it is rather uncommon to find coal train on the Moffat these days, it is even less common to find an eastbound empty coal train...but that's exactly what we have here. After meeting the Zephyr, this eastbound BNSF coal empty is pulling back out onto the main at East Leyden.

After meeting the westbound Zephyr here at Leyden, the dispatcher got the switch thrown and an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) set up for this BNSF coal train very quickly. Here, the eastbound is approaching said signal, ready to roll back out on to the main track.

An eastbound BNSF coal train sits in the siding at Leyden, awaiting the westbound Zephyr to show up. This coal train is rather unusual though in that it is empty! When coal trains do (and did) run on the Moffat, typically eastbounds are loaded, after loading at a mine in the Rockies. BNSF has a contract with a customer that wants Powder River Basin coal, so the train is headed east empty.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of this northbound loaded sand train on the Front Range Sub. The train has a track warrant as far as MP 25 in Boulder. When in reaches there, the dispatcher told the crew he should be able to get them another warrant to continue north.

A heavy northbound sand train slowly approaches the Sheridan Blvd underpass in Westminster. The Heritage 2 scheme is becoming less and less common on BNSF, but there are still quite a few units sporting the scheme. Mainly C44-9Ws, such as BNSF 5290.

A shot looking down the yard track where a dozen or so (empty) tank cars derailed and fell on their sides. The track on the far right is the main, and fortunately was entirely unaffected by the derailment.

A dozen or so tank car, that fortunately were empty, derailed at the Suncor oil refinery. The track they are on stopped prior to the grade crossing, which has been out of service for years. Appears the cars may have rolled down the track for some unknown reason.

In the early morning hours of June 16, a BNSF local working at the Suncor oil refinery derailed about a dozen empty tank cars on a yard track a little bit off from the mainline.

Although there is no train present, the interlocking at Utah Jct is a fascinating one. In addition to being the north end of North Yard, the main track for UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub and the main track for BNSF's Front Range Sub both cross UP's Belt Industrial Lead which leads to UP's Greeley Sub. A crazy number of tracks, switches, and signals are at this control point. Here, a red signal protects the diamond where BNSF's Front Range Sub and UP's Belt Industrial Lead cross. The signals are controlled by UP's dispatcher in Omaha, NE.

While double stack intermodal trains are a "dime a dozen" on lines like the Transcon and the Overland, they are far less common in the Denver-Metro area. Indeed, they are probably one of the least photographed types of trains I have. However, BNSF does run a Z-Train between Denver and Chicago (and back) six days a week. The eastbound version typically departs Denver shortly after sunrise in the summer months. Here, an ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws lead the hot shot east by the glass reflection of Barr Lake.

After meeting the morning westbound Zephyr at the east end of the 31st Street Yard, the hottest train in or out of Denver, BNSF's ZDENCHI, is rolling by the Suncor Oil Refinery toward the diamond at Sand Creek. BNSF's Brush Sub crosses over UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond (the track in the foreground) which takes UP from Denver to Cheyenne. A trio of elephant-style GEs lead the high priority east.

A single BNSF ES44C4 brings up the tail end of an eastbound UP oil train. This ES44C4 is a "Tier 4 Credit" locomotive. After the Tier 4 emissions standards went in to effect, railroads had some carbon credits built up and could use those as credit again Tier 3 locomotives.

The closest BNSF has come to offering up any type of heritage unit are these ES44ACs. Ten of them sport this special scheme that features the heralds of the railroads that merged to former Burlington Northern, plus the herald for Santa Fe.
