The Oakway SD60s are some of my favorite engines on the rails. I'm a fan of the spartan cab (and these were some of the last spartan cabs produced by EMD), and I really like the blue and white scheme too. Granted they look a bit better in 1987 when they were new to the rails, but I'll always take advantage of two of them coupled together. I doubt their leases will last much longer...

I have heard the question come up in the railfan community how many siding there are that aren't quite parallel to the main. The siding of Broomfield is an excellent example of this! Not only are the tracks not quite parallel, but they actually lay on two different grades. The HPASSAG (in the foreground) heads south on the main while the HDENLAU (in the background) holds on the elevated siding. It will be interesting to see how much this changes with the introduction of commuter trains along here.

The siding at Broomfield was originally a part of the CB&Q while the main was part of the C&S. Once it all fell under one railroad (and more and more streets starting popping up in Broomfield), the alignment of the siding became a bit less straight! Here, the northbound HDENLAU is headed north toward Nickel Street while the southbound HPASSAG holds on the main.

I'm not sure exactly when the lease will expire on the Oakways SD60s that are on BNSF's roster, but I would expect them to disappear in the next few years. The "Oakways" came onto BN's property in 1987, numbered as EMD 9000 to EMD 9099. Today, all things considered, their paint still looks pretty darn good! Take, for example, EMDX 9050 here on the BWWCHE-28.

After meeting the HDENLAU-27 at Broomfield, the HPASSAG-24 got a warrant from the north siding switch at Broomfield to the restricted limits at Clear Creek. With the switch at the south end of Broomfield restored to normal position, the train is picking up speed now as it heads towards town. A gibbous moon looks down on the train as it approaches 112th Avenue.

The southbound HPASSAG-24 holds the main track at Broomfield while waiting for the HDENLAU-27 to come out of Denver to meet it. The PASSAG (Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX) manifest is holding the main rather than the siding because there is another southbound coming out of Boulder, so there will be a three-way meet at Broomfield and the HDENLAU will hold the siding for both southbounds.

One of my favorite paint schemes of all time would be the blue and white scheme applied to the GP59, GP60, and SD60 demo units that EMD produced. A close second is the (very similar) scheme of the 100 "Oakway" SD60 leased to Burlington Northern in the late 1980's. Those units are still on the BNSF today, in relatively good condition!
