May and June are my two favorite months of the year! The weather warms up, leaves return to the trees, and in the Denver area, things generally really green up. This year has been no exception, as the landscape around Big Ten is really green. The westbound Zephyr is turning to head geographically north as it prepares to knock down a clear (green) signal at east Eisele (Clay).

The morning cloud cover helps to get some different perspectives in the area around Big Ten. Case-in-point is this view from the north side of the tracks as the morning Zephyr climbs the north edge of Big Ten Curve.

The westbound Zephyr approaches a green signal on the main at the west end of Rocky. The BNSF train in the background is actually an eastbound that is tied down in the siding. Once a relief crew gets on board in a few hours, the train will continue east (away from the camera) to Denver and beyond.

The westbound Zephyr, with Phase 7 AMTK 82 on the point, knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. The Zephyr is meeting an eastbound BNSF oil train, which is actually tied down at the moment, waiting for a relief crew that will not come for another five hours.

An eastbound BNSF oil train sits idly in the siding at Rocky. Note the purple-backed "D" sign, indicating the derail is set on the siding. The train showed up right around 2am and tied down and has been waiting for a relief crew ever since.

Two units bring up the tail end of a loaded coal train on the main at Plain. Coal loads typically only have one DPU on the tail end, so it is not entirely clear if the train will depart Denver with both units, or if one will be taken off.

As is typical for loaded UP coal trains on the Moffat, a trio of units has been cut in as mid-train swing helpers. A pair of ES44ACs and an SD70ACe have the duty today at Plain. This trio will be cut out when the train arrives in Denver. Note the paved road in the background. That is the far east (north) end of the new Canyon Pines neighborhood. Note that it does *not* connect in with Plainview Road.

Almost feels like it could be 2005. A pair of AC4400CWs leading an eastbound coal train at Plain! It is, however, 2024 as this GE pair crosses the grade crossing at Plain on the main track. In the distance, to the right, you can see the east portal of Tunnel 4.

This is a shot that I've want to get for years. I finally had the chance to get the shot today with this eastbound UP coal load as the subject. The train is winding through the S-Curves in the middle of Plain at Rainbow Cut. UP only runs a handful coal trains on the Moffat these days, making it a bit of an added bonus.

As the westbound Rocky Mountaineer approaches Blue Mountain Drive, the engineer throttles up and both GP40-3s kick up a little extra exhaust. It is a very rainy morning out today. In fact, there was some light hail falling as the train rolls west.

Growing up in the 1980s, going out train chasing with my dad, I was raised on Rio Grande. Consequently, spartan cab EMDs are by far my favorite locomotives. That makes seeing a pair of GP40-3s on the point of the Rocky Mountaineer really great every time I see them. Here, they are leading the Rocky Mountaineer as it approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive.

A look at a pair of former Chicago North Western C44-9Ws that have likely been sitting in storage in Grand Junction for months (or even years). Not entirely sure where they are headed, but it is possible they are going to be rebuilt into C44ACMs by UP. This would change them from DC traction motors to AC traction motors. UP has done this to roughly 50 other C44-9Ws as of this picture.

A pair of ES44ACs lead two (offline) C44-9Ws and a relatively short MGJNY, rolling east on the main at Leyden. There is a string of well cars in the siding at Leyden that, as of the time of this picture, have been tied down in the siding for "long term storage" for 4 months and 1 week. It has been an unusually chilly May so far, and this morning is no exception, with low-hanging clouds all along the Front Range and temperatures around 42°F (6°C).
