North Yard is pretty quiet on Independence Day 2024. A pair of SD40-2s wait for their next assignment. Three units wait for their turn to be serviced, while a string of other units are currently on the track being serviced.

Three units that were recently removed from a train await their turn to be serviced at North Yard. They will be refueled and, if necessary, their sand, water, and oil will be refilled as well. Note the unit closed to the camera is an ET44AC.

A pair of UP SD40-2s sit idle near the yard tower at North Yard. The 50+ year old units are now used as switchers at the yard, the same as many second generation EMDs in 2024.

The westbound Zephyr is stopped on Track 4 at Denver Union Station for its scheduled station stop. Here at Denver, there is a crew change. The crew getting off the train has been on since Lincoln, NE. The new crew will take the train to Grand Junction, CO. In the foreground, an RTD A-Line train (from Denver International Airport) is arriving on Track 1.

The westbound Zephyr backs across the wye bridge on the Buck Main toward Union Station. Once the train clears the switch, the conductor will re-align the switch, and the train will continue in to the station. The crew have already contacted RTD dispatch for permission to back in to Track 4.

The head end of the westbound Zephyr is stopped in the OS at Prospect Jct. The train is technically on Main 2, with Main 1 over to the right of the frame. The nose of AMTK 18 is actually in Yard Limits and out of CTC. The only stretch of CTC on Main 2 here at Prospect Jct is between the two signals.

A conductor from the California Zephyr is on the ground on the wye bridge and has aligned the switch for the Buck Main. You can see a restricting signal at the diamond. The Zephyr will use this track to back in to Union Station for its schedule station stop.

This UP manifest, which just ran south on the Greeley Sub, is nearing the end of its trip to North Yard. The train is about to cross over the Moffat Sub at the diamond here at Utah Jct. The track in the foreground, the Moffat Sub, is the track the Zephyr uses twice daily between Union Station and the Rockies. UP 7855 will be taking their train in to Yard Track 5. They will cut the engines off the train and run them to "the pit" for servicing.

At Utah Jct, UP 7855 crosses over BNSF's "New North Main" on its way in to North Yard. BNSF's New North Main continues north on the other side of the diamond to BNSF's Front Range Subdivision, which runs north to Cheyenne. This diamond is one of the very few stretches of CTC for BNSF trains anywhere between Denver and Cheyenne.

Wanted to grab a quick roster shot of UP 6294 specifically because, under that yellow paint scheme, you'd find scarlet and gray. Indeed, the AC4400CW started life as SP 241. This summer, the unit celebrates its 29th birthday, as it was originally delivered in June of 1995.

UP 7855 is slowing toward a stop on the Belt Industrial Lead. They do not have a route in to the yard yet, so the engineer will bring the train to a stop just east of Washington Street so as not to block any grade crossing while waiting to get in to North Yard.
