UP 4014 rolls past a crowd of folks gathered near the North Yard office, preparing to departing north for Cheyenne. I love the Colorado flag the steam crew has mounted on the engine.

After spending two nights in Denver, UP 4014 is slowly pulling out from one of the tracks near the North Yard office. Imagine a time when a scene like this at North Yard was a daily occurrence! Granted, Rio Grande never had any Big Boys, but the idea of steam moving around North Yard is a fun one.

Steaming up! UP's 83-year-old Big Boy steam engine is coming to life. Shortly, it will pull out of this track near the North Yard yard office and proceed north to Cheyenne.

The morning westbound Zephyr is moving along on the main track at track speed alongside North Yard. Passengers might just get a glimpse of UP's Big Boy steam engine (UP 4014), sitting near the yard office, preparing to departing north for Cheyenne.

UP's MGJNY has arrived in North Yard. After dropping off some cars in Track 5, the remainder of the train is being backed into Track 4. After clearing in Track 4, the power will wait for UP 4014, sitting back near the yard office, to back in to Track 9. Then, the power here will go to the fuel tracks.

The further into the 21st century we get, the less common SD70MACs are on BNSF. Came across BNSF 8838 as the third unit on a northbound manifest.

KCS 4803 is the second of three units on a northbound BNSF manifest that is coming to Denver from Dodge City, KS. Good to get as many shots of KCS Retro Belles while they are still on the rails, before they are all repainted.

In July 2005, Montana Rail Link updated their fleet of engines by adding some SD70ACes. Over a couple of years, MRL would add a total of 29 SD70ACes to their roster. Now, with MRL having been absorbed into BNSF at the start of 2024, MRL's SD70ACes have started to roam the BNSF system. Here, MRL 4305 is a DPU on a southbound coal load.

A portion of the Joint Line in Denver parallels I-25. Much of the morning rush has passed and traffic is fairly free-flowing as CSX 938, two additional CSX units, and a CP unit lead a UP unit ethanol train southbound on Main 2. the BNSF train in the background is tied down in the siding at Hogan's Alley, waiting for a recrew to take the train south.

After roughly an hour delay, CSX 938 is on the roll southbound on Main 2 alongside a BNSF manifest tied down in the siding at Hogan's Alley. A hand brake was left on on one of the cars on the train. The conductor released the hand brake and determined the wheels on the car were free-rolling and there was no damage. After walking back up to the head end, it was time to head south.

CSX 938 leads a UP ethanol train south at the north end of the Joint Line on Main 2. The train is crossing underneath of the RTD W-Line. This is the Light Rail line that runs from Denver Union Station out to the Jefferson County Courthouse. In the background, you can see the top of Empower Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos.

The track the unit ethanol train is on (led by three CSX units and a CP unit) is on UP's Main 2. Main 1 is off to the left. The other tracks in the shots are BNSF-owned and are not CTC here. They are yard tracks at the south end of Rennicks Yard. The ethanol train came to Colorado across the KP and is headed for NA Jct southeast of Pueblo. The sun is just barely cresting the horizon to the east.

Minutes before the sun peeks over the horizon, a southbound UP unit ethanol train is on UP's Main 2 between Fox Jct and Prospect Jct, alongside the south end of BNSF's Rennicks (intermodal) Yard. Three CSX units and a Canadian Pacific unit lead the train south.

At CP DS001 (Fox Jct), at the very east end of the Moffat Tunnel Sub, a unit UP ethanol train (with some foreign visitors for power) leads the train toward the Joint Line. The train came off the Belt Industrial Lead, running through North Yard on Track 1. It is now leaving the yard and entering Main 2 down to Propsect Jct where it will head south.

At the south end of Rennicks, BNSF's intermodal yard in Denver, a couple of sets of power are hanging out. A crew appears to be working on one set, perhaps for a southbound train on the Joint Line later in the day.
