A few minutes earlier, this BNSF manifest was descending the grade in the distance where the tank cars are now. The train is looping around at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, now headed for the detector at MP 22.6. You can see BNSF 700 descending in the background in another picture by clicking here.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is descending the grade from Tunnel 1 toward the base of Coal Creek Canyon. In another minute, the lead units will be coming around the curve on the tracks in the foreground. In fact, you can see this in another picture by clicking here.

Even in March, the sun is getting far enough to the north that this shot wasn't as well-lit as I had hoped. Regardless, AMTK 822 still looks good on the point of the westbound Zephyr as it climbs from Coal Creek Canyon toward the east portal of Tunnel 1.

The rising sun offers up a nice silhouette shot at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. A westbound coal train crosses over CO-72 as it loops around and prepares for the climb up to Tunnel 1 and Plainview.

A slightly different angle from Coal Creek Canyon. This westbound is swinging around the curve at the base of the canyon in the early morning light. With nothing headed east, the train has clear signals all the way to Tolland.

Having successfully navigated the S-Curves at Blue Mountain, the westbound Zephyr is making the ascent from the base of Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. The hotbox detector at MP 22.6 is visible in this shot.

This shot was supposed to look a lot different. For the 20 minutes leading up to the shot, the skies behind me were crystal clear with great sunlight shining down. Then, two minutes before the train showed up, of course, a huge cloud came in a killed the lighting. Oh well! The train in the shot is an empty ballast train, headed back to Wyoming for re-loading.

BNSF's eastbound Provo, UT to Denver, CO manifest wraps through the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. While you wouldn't guess it from the snow falling in this picture, it was actually only partly cloudy and dry just seven miles up the canyon at Crescent.

A westbound coal empty wraps around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. The train would continue west all the way to Winter Park before meeting an eastbound.

This is a picture that I've been wanting to try to get for awhile and the opportunity finally presented itself! A westbound coal empty wraps through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek on its journey west. The east end of Leyden is directly above the flag on the lead unit. You can see the tower that is near the west end of Leyden on the left side of the picture. And, in the distance, note the Cherokee Power Plant, which receives coal from Union Pacific.

DRGW 3154 leads the summer Ski Train west at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. This was definitely near the beginning of my photographic career!
