Most shots taken at Blue Mountain are long lens shots of train coming through the curves at the base of Coal Creek. I've certainly taken many such a shot in my time! But I thought it might be nice to widen the shot a bit and see not only the head end of this train, but the remaining 80% of the train too, running all the way back up to Tunnel 1.

A classic shot of from the grade crossing at Blue Mountain shows an eastbound manifest coming through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. On the point is one of the older ES44ACs on UP's roster, having been delivered in 2005. While "ES44AC" is the model designation from GE, UP actually designates this units as "C45AC-CTE".

A slightly different perspective of a train at Blue Mountain. Looks like Colorado hasn't yet received the memo that Spring has arrived and sunny, 70-degree days are expected! It is drizzling rain and about 45 degrees out as the MRONY-26 makes its way east toward Clay.

Afternoon clouds split up the exposure in this shot a lot, but I liked the shot anyway and therefore included it! The head end power is about 3,000 (rail) feet ahead of the hoppers in the foreground.

For five minutes before this train showed up, Blue Mountain was drenched in afternoon light. A fluffy white cloud moved in just as the train was leaving Clay! Oh well, nice to get a shot of one of the 15 remaining unpatched Espee AC4400CW's (as of this shot) in the consist.

Tis the season for maintenance and 2008 is no exception! Here, a ballast train is working its way west toward Bond. Ballast is significantly heavier than coal; those cars weigh close to 130 tons each.

The curves between the west end of Clay and Tunnel 1 are some of the best anywhere! Train crews don't often get the chance to observe their train as well as they can here. The MRONY wraps through the curves. The head end is approaching the Blue Mountain grade crossing while the tail end of the train still emerges from Tunnel 1. The back end of the train is almost 100 feet higher than the lead unit!

EMD's DDA40X is the longest diesel-electric locomotive on the rails today, coming in at almost 100 feet in length (about 30 meters). Here, the 6,600 horsepower unit leads a 11 car passenger special through the curves at Blue Mountain.

Here is a shot that is seldom repeated! The only active DDA40X leads a passenger special through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

The MNYPV-06 heads west at Blue Mountain with four units that are all different, but all somewhat the same! The first two units are both SD70Ms and are virtually identical save for the radiator flare on the second unit. The third unit is an SD70ACe and the fourth unit is an SD9043MAC. All with the same basic prime mover. The fourth unit, UP 8242, is the only SD9043MAC on UP's roster to have the lightning bolt scheme with the full wings on the nose.

When its winter time in Colorado, 2 o'clock in the afternoon can start to feel like "late in the day"! BNSF's Pueblo to Provo manifest climbs through the curves at Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. The last two cars of the train are just barely visible on the left side of the picture.

As I was growing up - back when Rio Grande was still alive and well - I never would have guessed that I'd be seeing regular BN (let alone BNSF) trains on the Moffat! Here, BNSF's trackage rights train - the HPUEPVO - rounds the corner toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain

And to think that just 48 hours ago, it was close to 70 degrees out! Now, the detector reports that it is a mere 18 degrees as the snow lightly falls on this eastbound coal load. The train would have clear signals all the way into town on this Thanksgiving-eve.

The snow is falling hard as this eastbound coal train passes the detector at MP 22.6. Through the snow, you can see the train wrap through the S-Curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

Another westbound run of the GrandLuxe Limited at Blue Mountain. Seven GrandLuxe cars are actually placed on the end of Amtrak 5 for a slightly more luxurious trip west to Emeryville. The cars almost double the length of Amtrak, but it was still running with only two P42s on this morning.
