An eastbound BNSF officer's special wraps around the hoppers on Big Ten Curve. The sun was playing a little hide and seek with the clouds, but fortunately came out for the shot on the curve.

An eastbound BNSF officer's special (train symbol OSTODEN2-11) glides down the main at Plain in semi-cloudy morning light. This would be the only train to sneak through this morning as UP has dedicated work windows for maintenance crews between sunrise and around 12:30pm. During these work windows, the westbound Zephyr is holding at Union Station in Denver until 12:30pm.

Just one single SD40-2 was in the engine house on this particular June morning. BNSF 1812 is here for its standard 92-day inspection. Once the inspection has been completed, it will be released from the shop and available for use. The unit is sitting on Line 1, close to the west end of the house.

A look down Line 3 from the east end of the engine house entrance. As you can see, this track only goes about 3/4 of the way through the house and then comes to a dead end.

A GP39-3 sits sits with its from truck missing from underneath it. The truck is also missing an axle. The axle is being replaced (with a new traction motor). Once the axle is secured back on the truck, the front of the GP39-3 will be lifted off the ground and the truck will be rolled in place underneath it.

Two cranes work together to lift up the front of the truck for this GP39-3. In a few minutes, the new axle and traction motor will be rolled underneath the truck and the truck will be lowered on to the axle.

With a new axle and traction motor now lowered down on to the rail head, a work crew detaches the axle from the crane that lowered it in place. Next, the axle will be rolled underneath the truck, visible behind the crew. Then, the truck will be rolled underneath the GP39-3, further in the background.

Changing out a traction motor is a fairly common type of maintenance that you are likely to see around busy rail yards. The traction motor is well-bolted to the axle, so it is far easier to simply change out the entire axle rather than just the traction motor alone. Here, a crew aligns this new axle and traction motor combination with the rail.

Don't forget your hard hat! Safety is taken very seriously by the railroads and hard hats, steel toed boots, and safety vests are required around the yard shop.

An SD40-2 sits on Line 1 inside the BNSF engine house. The unit is here for its 92-day inspection. Between roughly 1995 and 2015, 92-day inspections were no conducted in Denver. They had been moved to places like Alliance, NE. However, they were recently returned to Denver.

BNSF's engine fueling and sanding facilities at "the house" in Denver. The closed track is the Running track, the track to the right is the Pit track, and the track to the right of that is Rip 1. Not too many engines getting serviced on this particular Friday.

The doors for tracks Line 1 and Line 2 are open on the west side of BNSF's engine house in Denver. There are three tracks within the building, although Line 3 is only accessible on the east end as it dead-ends within the building.
