The Winter Park Express rounds the track at the base of Coal Creek Canyon as it climbs up toward Tunnel 1. CO-72 is the road in the background, crossing underneath the tracks and heading west up Coal Creek Canyon.

A pair of P42DCs lead the Winter Park Express out of Eisele (Clay). After running with only five coaches for a couple of trips, a sixth coach has been added back on. It was added at the same time AMTK 45 replaced AMTK 29 on the train. Note that you can just barely see the mainline west of Rocky, climbing Big Ten to the left.

AMTK 45 and AMTK 170 lead the Winter Park Express west in early morning light. With the start of Daylight Savings Time, the train gets to Leyden just minutes after sunrise.

Overnight, Amtrak removed AMTK 29 from the Winter Park Express and replaced it with AMTK 45. That unit leads the train as it knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden.

AMTK 29 has red class lights turn on on its nose, indicating it is bringing up the tail end of the Winter Park Express. The train is setup in a push-pull configuration. I am not quite sure why that was the case. The train is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing, just east of Leyden.

The final rays of direct sunlight have left as the sun has fully dipped behind the Rocky Mountains. The Winter Park Express slowly rolls east by a red signal at East Leyden. Yes, the signal facing away from the camera for the train was indeed red when it passed. The train stopped and got authority for the dispatcher to proceed east. The dispatcher could not set up a signal for the train as there is a spurious track occupancy on the main between Leyden and Arvada.

After receiving authority from DS-378 to proceed by a red signal at East Leyden, and after confirming the authority had been received through PTC on the computer, the Winter Park Express is starting to roll east out of Leyden toward Denver in the final moments of the remaining direct sunlight.

Just before the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains, the eastbound Winter Park Express slows alongside the low side gondolas that have now been stored in the siding at Leyden for about five months. I always love when Daylight Savings Time starts again, allowing for shots of the Winter Park Express in light close to Denver.

There is a track occupancy on the main between Leyden and Arvada. As a result, DS-378 is unable to get a signal for the Winter Park Express at the east end of Leyden. The train is slowing to a stop so it can get flagged by the red.

The Winter Park Express emerges from the east portal of Tunnel 1. The final tunnel on the journey into Denver. The second P42DC is on the tail end of the train, making an interesting look with only a single unit on the point.

The Winter Park Express knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Plain. Even though the train is about 45 minutes late, there is still enough light for some shots as today is the first day of Daylight Savings Time. Sunset bumped back from 6pm to 7pm!

A single P42DC, AMTK 170, crosses over East Portal Road between East Portal and Tolland. The unit is leading the Winter Park Express Ski Train. A second P42DC, AMTK 29, is on the tail end of the six car train.

The Winter Park Express knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of East Portal. The train had slowed at the west end due to a slow order. However, with the slow order now behind, the train has moved up to track speed. Interestingly, there is a P42DC on either end of the train...a setup I have not see before on the Winter Park Express.

The evening Winter Park Express is about 45 minutes late as it rolls east on the main at East Portal. For some reason unknown to me, rather than both P42DCs running around the train at Fraser, only one ran around, setting up an interesting 1x1 consist for the trip east.

The eastbound Winter Park Express Ski Train just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel and is rolling east on the main. Today, Daylight Saving Time started again for Colorado, adding another hour of light at the end of the day. There is now plenty of light, even when the Ski Train is 45 minutes late.
