You generally have to be quick on the trigger to get a shot of the Zephyr out here in the Utah desert. With the wide open spaces, many spots have a track speed of 79 MPH for passenger trains, and the Zephyr takes advantage of that! In this shot, the train is on the main at Desert, a very appropriate name for a siding here!

The westbound Zephyr departs the station at Grand Junction. A coal train that loaded at the West Elk Mine is actually making a reverse move onto the lead track along the main. It will be ready to depart west after the Zephyr departs and the Rocky Mountaineer comes through.

The westbound Zephyr is making an on-time station stop at Grand Junction. Passengers have about five minutes to step off the train here for a quick stretch. The engineer and conductor also change crews here. A Salt Lake City crew will board the train for the journey west across the Utah desert. The Denver crew, getting off the train, will stay in Grand Junction overnight and take tomorrow's eastbound train back to Denver.

One of the most scenic places any long distance Amtrak train traverses is Glenwood Canyon. In addition to the tracks and the Colorado River, the canyon contains I-70. This was one of the final major pieces of the interstate system to be completed. Until the 1980s, I-70 was just a two lane highway through the canyon. Now, it is four lanes through the entire thing.

It looks like it could be December, but in fact we are over halfway through April as a substantial spring storm brings a lot of snow to the area. The westbound Zephyr heads into Tunnel 1, trying to make up a bit of time. It is almost 90 minutes late this morning, due to extreme weather between Denver and Chicago.

The eastbound Zephyr is running about two hours late as it accelerates toward the west switch of Leyden. The overcast skies and the fading light has resulted in a bit of a low-light shot, with a hit of blur in the Zephyr. The third unit is AMTK 371, a brand new ALC-42 Charger, being transported from the Siemens plant in California to Chicago and, quite possibly, on to Beech Grove, In after that.

The leaves on trees are working on making their spring comeback as the eastbound Zephyr descends from Big Ten Curve. AMTK 203, painted in commemoration of Operation Lifesaver's 50th Anniversary, is leading the train this afternoon. A number of spring storms have been rolling through the area, creating some fantastically dramatic clouds to the east.
