It's rather nice that Amtrak has been running these two freshly painted P42DCs on the Zephyr for the past week or so. The irony being that, as great as it is to catch these units now, looking back ten years from now, when the Phase 7 scheme is completely ubiquitous, the Phase 5 scheme will be missed. The Zephyr is climbing the north side of Big Ten Curve in some powdered snow.

The westbound Zephyr is making the climb up and around Big Ten Curve with a pair of very colorful units on the point. In just a minute, the train will be knocking down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay) in the distance.

As of this picture, Amtrak had repainted three P42DCs in the new Phase 7 paint scheme. Two of them are leading the westbound Zephyr on a cold, somewhat snowy spring morning. The train is rolling a few minutes late, just west of Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr arrived in Denver 9 minutes late, but ended up departing 1 hour and 45 minutes late. The reason being that AMTK 139 (the second P42DC) developed a mechanical issue. AMTK 142 is a "protection unit" that has been kept in Denver. Essentially, it's a spare unit for just such an occurrence. Three units is a little unusual to see on the Zephyr. Unfortunately, it mean that AMTK 161 (the Phase 1 Heritage unit) was no longer leading. Here, the westbound highballs through Leyden.

At the west switch of Rocky, the eastbound Zephyr is reaching the end of a 15 MPH slow order that has been in effect (off and on) since Cliff. The train, moving in and out of partly cloudy shadows, is one has become the standard consist these days, including seven Superliners.

The terrain around Big Ten is really starting to green up here at the halfway point through April as we get a bit deeper in to Spring. The evening eastbound Zephyr descends down the grade from Big Ten Loop toward a clear (green) signal at the west end of Rocky.

AMTK 54 and AMTK 147 lead the eastbound Zephyr along the south edge of Big Ten Loop. The open hoppers that serve as a wind break are just out of the frame to the left.

It's always great to get a bit deeper into Spring, it is always great to have late running later in the day, allowing for some daylight shots of the eastbound Zephyr as it descends toward Denver. Here, running almost exactly on time, the eastbound Zephyr rolls through the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive.

Partly cloud skies result in a patchwork of shadows being cast around the area of Blue Mountain Drive. The head end of the eastbound Zephyr is in the sunlight while most of the rest of the train is still cast in shadows.

At the base of Coal Creek Canyon, the eastbound Zephyr crosses over CO-72, finding a pocket of sunlight in and area of building clouds that has the foreground entirely engulfed in shadow.

Amtrak now has three Phase 7 P42DCs (AMTK 174, AMTK 82, and AMTK 138). AMTK 138 is the newest repaint in the new scheme, and it along with AMTK 82 led the Zephyr westbound out of Denver. This is the first time a patched pair of Phase 7 P42DCs have led the Zephyr (or, to the best of my knowledge, any train).

The morning Zephyr, with a pair of Phase 7 P42DCs, heads west alongside the Sheridan Blvd commuter rail station. The Zephyr has what has become standard consist. A transition sleeper, two regular sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and two coaches.

With temperatures right around 60°F (15°C) and crystal clear blue skies, it is a wonderful day along the Front Range. A P42DC and a P40DC (which has since been rebuilt as a P42DC) lead the westbound Zephyr in the middle of the Tunnel District. The train is approaching the east portal of Tunnel 7.
