It is getting to be late in the afternoon as this eastbound BNSF manifest rolls through the OS at the east switch of Rocky. At this point, the crew will switch from channel 2323 to channel 1414 and move from UP DS-82 to UP DS-86. Five GEs are in the command of the trains, which is primarily composed of tank cars. (Note: Channel 1414 being used between Prospect Jct and Rocky for DS-86 is a recent change. It had been channel 9292, but was changed due to the amount of radio traffic on 9292).

Yard Shots BNSF
This is something of a rare shot in that there aren't currently any units at the fuel racks to the left of the engine house. Typically, there are several units there being serviced. On this Sunday, however, just a single SD40-2 sits idling away, awaiting assignment.

A sharp looking SD40-2 (wearing the "New Image" scheme) sits north of BNSF's engine house, most likely awaiting a switching assignment either in the yard or on a local.

Between two westbound manifests (one UP and one BNSF), this was the only unit I saw that was either orange or yellow! This BNSF C44-9W teams up with a CSX C40-8W, shoving on the tail end of a long manifest looping through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon up toward Tunnel 1.

Perhaps the most colorful consist on the Moffat in quite some time, this BNSF manifest is led by a Warbonnet C44-9W, a CSX C40-8W, and an ex-SOO SD60. All three units (plus two DPUs on the end) were working as hard as they could, although they were only making about 15 MPH up the hill.

When I was a kid, I had an HO SOO SD60 that I always liked. So it was great to see the real world version on this BNSF manifest. Granted it isn't technically SOO anymore...it is now a CEFX leaser! At first, I thought it was the same ex-SOO leaser that has appeared on the Beer Run lately. But that was CEFX 6012.

Talk about a unique and colorful consist! On a partly cloudy July afternoon, a westbound BNSF manifest is led by a trio of units without a trace of orange...well, okay...there is a trace of orange on the lead unit. But the BNSF Warbonnet / CSX Blue and Gray / ex-SOO Leaser lashup was a very welcome sight indeed.

Although a bit dirty - particularly on the plow - it was still great to catch this Warbonnet on the point of a westbound BNSF manifest. The train seemed to be a bit underpowered as it was working as hard as it could just to crawl along at 15 MPH.

After crossing Miller Street, the Beer Run pulls slowly west on the Golden Sub. If you look close, you can see the tracks curve to the right just ahead. BNSF's track was ripped out here (the track had been straight) due to RTD Gold Line (commuter rail) construction. The track the train is using in the mean time is one of the commuter rail tracks. BNSF's track will be move further south, away from the commuter rail tracks. Once put back in, BNSF will stop using the commuter rail track.

Due to the increased power demands BNSF has had, some older power and some lease power have appeared on the Beer Run! As seen here, a great looking SD60M is working the train. Construction here is for the RTD Gold Line (Commuter Rail) set to open in 2016. The train is winding through a shoofly as a result of the construction.

Even though Soo never ran in (or really anywhere near) Colorado, for some reason the paint scheme is very nostalgic for me. I do seem to recall having an HO model in the Soo scheme, so maybe that is why! Here, this former Soo SD60 is now a CEFX leaser. BNSF is utilizing its services to free up its own (more modern) power in road service.

It had been quite some time since I last saw an SD60M prior to seeing BNSF 8167 on the Beer Run here. The units had been put in storage a few years earlier. However, with a huge increase in power demand, BNSF has reactivated them and put them to work! The paint on this particular SD60M looks pretty great, considering its age.

Since BNSF has been suffering from a bit of a power shortage lately, the result has been some very colorful power showing up in various places. The power on the Beer Run between Denver and Golden is no exception! A former Soo (now CEFX) SD60 leaser, a CEFX SD40-2 leaser, a BNSF SD60M, and a BNSF SD40-2 make for a great (orange-free) consist! The train is sitting near Tennyson Street, waiting for a recrew.

These days, freight trains do not typically (in general) run on a schedule. However, there are exceptions...at least to some extent! BNSF runs a single Z-Train into and out of Denver. The ZDENCHI and ZCHIDEN consist of COFC and TOFC cars (including UP trailers). The ZDENCHI departs Rennicks Yard each morning usually around 8:30am. If Amtrak is on time, this is usually right after it departs. On this Saturday morning, Amtrak was running late. As a result, the Z-Train is approaching a restricting signal at west Irondale. It will have to wait about 15 minutes for the tardy Zephyr to show up.
