A few hundred feet down the tracks, you can see the bridge under which Boulder creek is supposed to flow. Granted, with the water being as high as it is, water still is flowing underneath it. The challenge for engineers will be getting the creek to "want" to take its previous path, which include turns here at the tracks and running parallel over to the bridge.

This view of the rapids of the relocation of Boulder creek clearly shows how the river just made a new path for itself. Would imagine the water is probably at least 10 feet deep still right here.

While there is nothing but water beneath this ballast, the ballast is packed in so tight between the ties that it is hanging around!

Another view of the 60-foot wash out on the BNSF Front Range Sub right near the south siding switch of Boulder. Not sure how BNSF will get this repaired until the water level significantly decreases!

Thanks in no small part to the advent of CWR (Continuous Welded Rail), washouts like this often result in the rails left dangling over the now-missing ground. Boulder creek, rerouted by Mother Nature after major flooding, is still near the rails as the rapids rush downstream.

Prior to the massive flooding a week earlier, this shot would have just been tracks on a fill. Boulder creek used to run parallel to the tracks (on the right side) in this shot. The massive amounts of water, however, led to the destruction of the fill and this new path for the creek.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is approaching the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada after meeting Amtrak at Leyden. Not uncommon is the large number of tank cars that make up the train. A bit more uncommon, however, is the Heritage 1 C44-9W leading the train!

Unfortunately, I personally feel that EMD has gone from the masters of "aesthetically pleasing" engine design to "what were they thinking"? Particularly when it comes to the nose. Now, obviously the goal is to be functional, not pretty. I realize that...but EMD used to mix function and aesthetics. Something I think they have lost.

While I am (and have always been) an EMD fan at heart, I must admit I do like the look of the latest generation of engines to roll out off the General Electric assembly line.

Due to the grade crossing at Broomfield, northbounds that are waiting to meet southbounds at Broomfield will typically hold on the main alongside Church Ranch Lake about a mile south of the siding. A 10,000-foot-long train could stop here without blocking any crossing.

It has been a particularly cold and snowy Winter and Spring, so it was really nice to find moderate temperatures and this northbound coal empty hanging out near Church Ranch Lake on my way in to work.

This southbound HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) is about to pass beneath US-36. The train has an ES44C4 on the point. Despite having six axles, only four of them are powered, making this unit an A1A-A1A unit (instead of a C-C unit). The center axles are not powered, but help to disperse the weight of the unit on the rails. So far, only BNSF has ordered these. What's more, EMD will be competing with the C4 by creating their own similar unit. EMDs unit will differ slightly in that their truck configuration will be B1-1B. The unit will be called an SD70ACe-P4 and should be arriving any time.

Note the conductor in the cab, giving a friendly wave!

A southbound manifest is holding short of the Nickel Street grade crossing on the main track in the distance. It is waiting for the rail train rolling down the siding to the right. The rail train just released its warrant. This will allow the manifest to copy a new warrant from the dispatcher to proceed from the south siding switch of Broomfield all the way in to town.

UP 7354 leads a BNSF rail train through the siding at Broomfield. They are meeting a southbound HLAUDEN which is already holding at the Nickel Street grade crossing.

This northbound loaded rail train is passing Church Ranch ... errr ... Lake? Unfortunately, the lake is nothing more than an empty field at the moment!
