It is currently the offseason for the Rocky Mountaineer's "Rockies to the Red Rocks" train. The cars are seen here in UP's 36th Street Yard, awaiting the start of 2023 season in April.

Although the leaves have finally fallen off of most of the deciduous trees at this point in the fall, a lot of the ground shrubs are still holding a lot of color. The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer passes through the colorful scene just east of Yarmony as some low-hanging clouds envelop a part of the mountain in the background.

The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer follows along a relatively still Colorado River just east of Yarmony. This is near the location of a derailment nearly 20 years ago that involved one of EMD's SD70ACe demo units.

Just east of Bond at State Bridge, the Rocky Mountaineer is continuing its trek east along the Colorado River. The Rocky Mountaineer leased a pair of SD70Ms from Union Pacific for power on the train in 2021. As you can clearly see, a wrap (of slightly mismatched yellow) was applied to both units to allow them to represent the Rocky Mountaineer. It sounds as though two Rocky Mountaineer units (based in Canada) are having PTC installed and will be on the train in 2022!

After many years of losing trains from the Moffat (The American Orient Express, the Anschutz Ski Train, the Circus Train, nearly Amtrak due to COVID, etc), it is really great to see a passenger train added to the Moffat this year! The Rocky Mountaineer's Rockies to the Red Rocks is a deluxe train that makes two weekly round trips between Denver, CO and Moab, UT. Here, the train is climbing up the grade from Coal Creek toward Tunnel 1. Rumor has it that two of the Mountaineer GP40-2L units will receive PTC prior to the start of the train running in April 2022.

After meeting a unit oil train at Leyden, UP 5107 - wearing a "wrap" to represent the Rocky Mountaineer - throttles up as it works to accelerate the train up to track speed. UP 5105, another SD70M wearing a wrap, is down for mechanical issues at the moment. So a non-wrapped UP SD70M is filling in at the moment.

UP 5105 has the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer rolling east on the siding through Bond. Most UP trains would change crews at Bond, but that was not the case with the Mountaineer. Crews from the Canadian-based tourist railroad have made the trip to Colorado and have qualified for running on the former Rio Grande. A single crew will operate between Denver and Glenwood Springs (and vice versa). Here, the train is on the siding as it will be meeting the westbound Zephyr.

The west end of Dell is on a long, nearly 180° curve as the tracks follow the Colorado River. The middle stretch of the siding, however, is nice a straight. That is the part of Dell the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer is follow along now.

On the main at Dell, the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer wraps along the Colorado River with a pair of UP SD70Ms on the point. Dell is one of two sidings on the Dotsero Cutoff between Dotsero and Bond. As is the case with most siding, it also has a house track, although it is a stub end house track, only accessible from the west. There have been rumors in the last year or so that UP has considered taking Dell out of service, spiking the switches, to reduce the amount of maintenance required on the former Rio Grande. So far, that has not happened.
