It is a perfect morning for the annual running of the Cheyenne Frontier Days passenger special. We are just north of Platteville here as the train glides by. With no operable steam this year, UP used the E-units and the DD40AX for power.

Union Pacific is a real class act when it comes to heritage equipment. Decades after the last DDA40X was retired from revenue service, UP 6936 still run and can, from time to time, be found on the rails. Such was the case on this July day when it was assisting as power on the Cheyenne Frontier Days passenger special.

UP maintains two E9As and an E9B. They are a part of the Union Pacific heritage fleet and they look sharp. They, along with DDA40X #6936, lead the Cheyenne Frontier Days passenger special north at 144th Avenue south of Brighton. I like the Colorado and Wyoming state flags on the cab.

Cheyenne Frontier Days! Believe it or not, but it has been six years since I actually go track side for the event. As you may or may not have heard, 2015 was the second year that Union Pacific did not have an operable steam engine for Frontier Days. However, a trio of classic E-units and a DDA40X make for some might fine power for the day.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of this southbound unit covered hopper train as it approaches a clear signal at the north end of Nunn. The town of Nunn has of population of roughly 475 people (as of 2013). The town motto (as seen on the water tower) is "Watch Nunn Grow".

There is a lot of controversy over whether or not UP's application of the American flag on its units is a good thing or a bad thing. While I don't care to get in to such a debate here on my website, I would like to point out that I do personally appreciate the effort that a UP employee made to clean the flag on the side of this somewhat dingy ES44AC.

There is a great bridge just north of Nunn, CO where US-85 crosses over UP's Greeley Subdivision. In the late afternoon, southbounds are hit with just about the best light you could ask for! Case-in-point is this southbound unit covered hopper train, headed for Milliken, CO.

This unit train of covered hoppers is approaching the north end of Nunn on the Greeley Sub. The train is headed for Milliken, CO on UP's Fort Collins Sub where it will be loaded and then return north.

A BNSF (reroute) molten sulfur train sits in the siding at Platteville. It was rerouted because floods from a week earlier took out the Front Range Sub, which was still under repair at this point. The BNSF train is awaiting the arrival of the California Zephyr, rerouting through Wyoming as the Moffat was also damaged in the flooding.

There is a little bit of clutter in the foreground, but I figured it was worth it to get this rare shot of a BNSF (reroute) train sitting in the siding at Platteville. The train is awaiting the arrival of Amtrak so it can continue north and move back to its own property in Cheyenne.

At Platteville, this BNSF rerouted "stinky slinky" creeps in to the siding to meet the southbound California Zephyr. This train is headed for Bonneville, WY where it will load with molten sulfur before returning to Galveston, TX.

A pacing shot of BNSF 5295 leading the "stinky slinky" north on UP's Greeley Subdivision. The last thing Colorado needs right now, more rain, build in the thunderstorms to the east.

BNSF trains running from Denver to northern Colorado are not unusual. BNSF trains doing this on UP's Greeley Sub are unusual! Due to the closure of the Front Range Sub after flooding a week earlier, the Galveston, TX to Bonneville, WY (G-BNVGAT4-19A) "stinky slinky" molten sulfur train still needs to run. So, a BNSF road pilot (familiar with the Greeley Sub) got on board with a BNSF crew and took this train north.

In Cheyenne, the train will use the transfer track to move back to BNSF property and continue to Bonneville.

This is a rare sight that may never be duplicated again. BNSF's "stinky slinky" (molten sulfur train), which typically runs on the Front Range Sub, is detouring over UP's Greeley Sub. The Front Range Sub is still out of service after severe flood damage a week earlier.

In the distance, UP's switches auto racks at the Rolla auto facility.

It had been nearly 5 1/2 years since I last shot one of the two Olympic units! November of 2006 was the last time I saw UP 2002 when it led a manifest down the Greeley Sub. It's been over six years since I saw sister unit, UP 2001.
