Meanwhile, what's up with the blue and white BNSF unit? This is a former Conrail GP38AC that BNSF has acquired. For the time being, they simply added their logo to the unit until some point in the future when it receives a full repaint. This blue and white scheme has earned these units the nickname "smurfs". That coal load would end up derailing a single car back up at Tunnel 12 though. This BNSF manifest would ultimately back down in between switches at Clay and wait for a relief crew. After reassembling their train on the main track, the local pulled into the clear to wait for the train to pass. Several cars did not need to go down the Lafayette branch, so the local got permission from the dispatcher to leave the cars sitting out on the main track. Fortunately, the dispatcher didn't have anything coming out of town immediately, so this did not cause any bottlenecks. The Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, which opened in December 2004, is behind the train. Longs Peak is towering over them all.
