The Rocky Mountaineer heads west on Main 1 through Helper. The upper yard, to the left, is almost completely empty. For years, it was used to store coal hoppers. With coal largely gone as a resource in the United States, only a few strings of hoppers still remain. Seems kind of ironic that there are so many empty yard tracks here, when UP uses CTC sidings in the desert for storing cars.

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer is has eight cars, testing out expanded service set to being in 2026. The train will be rebranded from the Rockies to the Red Rocks to the Canyon Spirit. The train, for the first time, rolls by the Amtrak platform in Helper on Main 1. Main 2 sits closest to the platform, which has a couple of folks watching the passing train.

The Rocky Mountaineer rolls west on the mainline by oil transload facility at Wash, just outside Wellington, UT. If you've seen oil trains running on the Moffat in Colorado, this is where they are headed (if they are empty) or where they are coming from (if they are loaded).

With the Book Cliffs in the distance, the Rocky Mountaineer is now on the 1.1% grade, climbing up Cedar Hill. The train only has another 35 miles or so before reaching Helper and the end of the Utah desert.

At the Moab exit off of I-70, exit 182, there is an eccentric gas station known as "Jackass Joe's". It is colorful and covered in stickers. The gas is a bit pricey...$2.00 more per gallon than the Exxon a few miles east in Thompson Springs...but it is quite the little station. The westbound Rocky Mountaineer passes by on the mainline at Brendel.

After coming up the Cane Creek Subdivision from Seven Mile and running around their train at Thompson, the Rocky Mountaineer is now heading further west than it ever has before. In 2026, the plan is to expand service of the train from Denver to Salt Lake City. This is the a non-revenue test run of the service.

At milepost 21 on the Cane Creek Sub, at a location that is, ironically enough, named Seven Mile, the Rocky Mountaineer's Rockies to the Red Rocks has completed the journey to the Red Rocks. Employees of the Mountaineer have detrained and are gathered for a briefing in advance of the upcoming season, set to start in a couple of weeks. A bus stands by to take the employees to a hotel in Moab for the night.

Just before crossing over a greaser, which helps lubricate the tracks and wheel flanges to slow the wear and tear on the rails, the Rocky Mountaineer crosses a cattle guard. The train will pass underneath UT-191 just ahead, right near the Canyonlands Airport.

RMRX 8020 and train cross over the currently dried up Thompson Wash in the town of Thompson Springs, UT. The town barely exists anymore, with only 104 people actually calling it home (as of 2020). That, however, is a fairly significant increase since 2020 when the population was a mere 34 people. A new RV park in town seems to be attracting more folks.

Some maintenance of way work at Sagers resulted in the Rocky Mountaineer briefly stopped and then running through the siding. Now back on the main, the GP40-3s are throttling up as the train really bites into the 1% grade on the climb up Thompson Hill, kicking out a little exhaust for their effort.

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer "Rockies to the Red Rocks" is making its way through incredibly scenic Ruby Canyon along the Colorado River. The siding ahead is named Utaline as the siding sits right on the line between Colorado and Utah.
