While it is only 7°F (-14°C) here along the Front Range, it around 25°F (-4°C) in Winter Park. Still cold, but not quite a frigid as here. The train kicks up some snow, blowing alongside the Superliners, as it heads west on time just east of the Kipling Street grade crossing in Arvada. Ironically enough, the Phase 4 heritage unit, seen here on the main at Plain, is the heritage unit that has probably spent the most time on the Zephyr since the heritage units were introduced 15 years ago in 2011. The BNSF unit was added to the train in Lincoln, NE overnight due to a mechanical issue with one of the P42s. I am not sure which one or what the issue was. When the train stopped in Lincoln for its scheduled station stop, the issue could not be resolved, so a BNSF ES44C4 was added to the point of the train. It is taking several minutes for the unit to fully warm up and, as a result, a lot of white exhaust is currently being produced. Also of note in this shot in UP 1019, a GP60. For whatever reason, UP seems to utilize GP60s in California and Texas quite a bit. They don't show up in Colorado all that often. This unit was originally a C44-9W, but UP rebuilt and converted it from DC traction motors to AC traction motors. The unit also sports UP's newest paint scheme.
