Yard Shots Union Pacific
Like most Class 1 railroads today, Union Pacific has a lot of older units in long term storage. Many of them, including dozens of SD70Ms, are currently stored at 36th Street Yard in Denver. The units are waiting for one of three things. To just be reactivated and put back in service, to be rebuilt and put back in service, or be sold. Until one of those three things happens, here they will sit quietly and wait.

Yard Shots Rocky Mountaineer
The Rocky Mountaineer's SD40M-2 pulls the newly lettered GP40-3s as the Canyon Spirit through the yard at 36th Street. You can see the Mountaineer cars in the distance on the track they lease from Union Pacific.

Yard Shots Rocky Mountaineer
With the expansion of the Rocky Mountaineer next year, running from Denver to Salt Lake City (with layovers at Glenwood Springs and Moab), the two GP40-3s have been re-lettered for the Canyon Spirit. The change was made in the UP car shops at North Yard. Here, the Mountaineers leased SD40M-2 is taking the units back to 36th Street, where the Mountaineer's equipment is stored.

It is time for the Winter Park Express to kick off another season, even though there is currently no sign of winter in Colorado! As has been the case for the past few years, the Ski Train is starting the season with just five Superliners (four coaches plus a lounge car). The train is just west of Tunnel 1 on a very moderate morning, with temperatures around 50°F (10°C) just six days before Christmas.

When the Zephyr departed Chicago yesterday, AMTK 207 was leading the train and AMTK 140 was trailing. Upon arriving in Denver, the position of the units was swapped so that AMTK 140 was leading. I am not sure why Amtrak swapped the units, but it was likely due to some sort of mechanical issue. Consequently, the train is a little over 90 minutes late. The train met an eastbound loaded oil train at Leyden, still visible in the distance.

BNSF typically runs loaded oil train on the Moffat with three units on the point and three on the end. Union Pacific has opted for three mid-train helper about two thirds of the way through the train. The first DPU, UP 7000, was originally GECX 4000 and was a warranty protection unit, built in 1997. It was subsequently bought by UP and added to the roster as UP 7000.

A majority of the last two years, Union Pacific has used the siding at Leyden for long term car storage. At the moment, however, the siding is empty and DS-378 is using the siding for a meet with the westbound Zephyr.

UP 8504 is sporting Union Pacific newest paint scheme. This is one of the first SD70ACes I've see with the new scheme. The train is headed for the siding at Leyden to meet a slightly late westbound Zephyr.

Four units lead a southbound Z-Train on the Greeley Sub between La Salle and Platteville. The train is making track speed on the trip south, making it very hard to catch up to for subsequent shots. Turns out this would be the last shot in daylight before the sun would set anyway.

We are only a week away from the shortest day of the year, so the sun is setting mighty early! With roughly 30 minutes left before the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains, a northbound special crosses the South Platte River between La Salle and Greeley. The UP train, with a CSX visitor from the east, is a special nuclear cask train.

Just south of the E-470 overpass, a sole CSX ES44AH leads a special train north on the Greeley Sub. The two curious looking cars on this train are carrying radioactive nuclear material. The casks allow the material to be safely transported by rail.
