The train is slowing to 10 MPH on account of a slow order ahead through a minor derailment repair site. The derailment happened the previous Friday. Three units are on the point, with a single DPU bringing up the rear. The train is comprised of the two most common cars found on the MGJNY, some loaded coal hoppers, and some covered hoppers. An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver had a truck derail on a tank car. No cars fell over, but there was some track damage. You can clearly see the fresh ballast that has already been laid. A track foreman just checked the gauging here, and is informing DS-380 that a track tamper needs to run through here before two eastbounds. Also note the flood light which has been used at night as crews have been working around the clock to get operations back to normal. A car with a derailed truck ran east on the main here. If you look closely, it looks like you might be able to see a flange mark in the middle of the track, offset to the west. DS-378 informed this eastbound coal empty that they would be holding at Green River for "at least an hour, and possibly longer". UP has a maintenance window ahead at Solitude. The empty will take the siding at Green River to wait not only for the maintenance window to clear up, but for BNSF's Denver to Provo as well. The train is coming to a stop west of the west switch for a few minutes to allow the conductor to run over to a gas station in Green River and pick up a few snacks for himself and the engineer. UP has what is known as a Form B active through here. For a Form B, a track foreman is in charge and puts up red flags around the work zone. Trains are not allowed to enter the work zone without explicit permission from the track foreman. As you can see, it appears that UP is replacing a lot of ties through here. When UP repaired the tracks to get the mainline reopened, they did not bother to actually replace the switch. As you can see, the switch points are entirely missing. Not sure what this will mean for the siding of Solitude. UP has used it for long term storage of cars. Indeed, there are cars being stored there even when this picture was taken. And of the ones they do have, even fewer are EMD's SD70ACe-T4. The units are mechanically complex and expensive to maintain. UP 3069 is an example of one such unit. Not the long hood that does not have the slants that of a normal SD70ACe. Additionally, there are three radiator fans instead of two.
