On a very chilly January morning, a KCS-led BNSF (trackage rights) manifest approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada. There was no horn to be heard at this moment, as the grade crossing at Simms Street has been converted to a "quiet zone", to keep Arvada a little quieter.

It isn't too often that a Kansas City Southern unit shows up on the Moffat, let alone on the point. However, on this (very snowy) Wednesday morning, a gray KCS SD70MAC leads a BNSF manifest east out of Leyden toward Denver.

The Zephyr, running right on time in the snow, meets an eastbound with a somewhat rare visitor. KCS SD70MAC #3907 led BNSF's Provo, UT to Denver, CO trackage rights manifest over the Moffat.

I enjoy shots of units from above, simply because they are less common that most other shots. If you hadn't seen the top of an SD70ACe before, not that there are only two radiator fans instead of three. And, as with all EMD units since the SD70, the dynamic brakes are located behind the radiator.

This great looking consist just happens to be 75% EMD which, of course, is something of an oddity with GE dominating. That fact is unlikely to change anytime soon. It sounds like GE will have a Tier 4 compliant engine ready by mid-2015 whereas EMD says they won't even have a prototype until 2016 and won't be ready for production until 2017! All new engines must meet Tier 4 EPA emissions standards starting January 1, 2015.

The MRONY had a very colorful consist on this particular afternoon. Not only was the train led by UP 1983 (Western Pacific heritage unit), but the second unit out was this (slightly scorched) Kansas City Southern Retro Belle.

Coincidentally, this just happens to be the first Retro Belle unit that I ever shot and posted, way back in December of 2007.

20 years ago, who would have thought that one day you could find a pair of (very colorful) Kansas City Southern units leading a Union Pacific military special on the former DRGW mainline in North Yard!

Kansas City Southern really hit a home run with the Retro-Belle scheme in my personal opinion. So it was really great seeing a matched pair of Belle's on a military special in Denver. As it turns out, this is the first ES44 Retro-Belle that I've seen!

A Military Special came into Denver off the Limon Sub overnight. It crossed the Belt Main and entered the Main Track at CP DS002. After pulling down to Fox Junction, the crew on the train was ready to depart south on the Joint Line for Fort Carson. But BNSF wasn't ready for the train! With Amtrak coming, the train had to make a reverse move to get in the clear in the North Yard Siding. That worked out well for me as I got a shot of it backing down the main.

I always enjoy running across the occasional "Retro Belle" SD70ACe. I'm really happy that Kansas City Southern has reintroduced this classic scheme as I find it to be one of the sharpest schemes on railroads today.

There has been massive flooding in the Omaha, NE area this summer. Consequently, BNSF has rerouted a lot of traffic through Colorado. As a part of the reroutes, several coal empties have run north on the Front Range Sub. Here, one waits for the dispatcher to allow the train to proceed into Broomfield for a meet.

Wow! This unit hasn't been around too terribly long and it has already been beat up quite a bit. This is a Kansas City Southern de Mexico SD70ACe in the "Retro Belle" scheme on the Denver to Kansas City manifest.

I have always been a fan of Kansas City Southern. Probably because the railroad was very similar in size to the Rio Grande and yet it has survived and even grown into the 21st Century

After its long trip from Stockton, CA, this eastbound BNSF trackage rights train is just 10 miles away from its own tracks! UP's DS-86 put it in the hole at Leyden because BNSF's 31st Street Yard doesn't have room for the train yet. A sharp-looking Kansas City Southern Retro-Belle leads the train.
