On the final day of 2024, an eastbound UP unit oil train wraps around the east edge of Big Ten Curve, continuing its descent toward Rocky. A recently rebuilt (and repainted) C44ACM leads the train, with a ET44AC second.

An eastbound unit oil train is on the south edge of Big Ten Loop, three units on the point. The train has 93 loaded oil tank cars with three units on the point and three units on the tail end. This is the first time I've seen this configuration on a UP oil train on the Moffat. Typically, UP has run their trains in a 2x2x2 or 2x2x1 configuration.

An eastbound UP oil train leaves the main at Eisele (Clay) behind, and will be taking the siding at Rocky to meet a westbound UP oil empty, as well as the westbound Zephyr, which is just departing Union Station. Note the westbound at Rocky, already waiting on the main track of the eastbounds arrival.

UP 8854 is holding on the main at the west end of Rocky. Why is it holding on the main? Because it will be meeting an eastbound oil train that is currently above it, on the main at Eisele (Clay). Usually, the first train to arrive for a meet would take the siding, but in this case, the eastbound will hold the siding at Rocky for the westbound Zephyr. The flag on UP 8854 has definitely seen better days.

UP 1828 is the power on UP's Julesburg Local, currently sitting in Sterling with no crew, waiting to head east. UP 1828 was delivered to UP in March 1975 as UP 3293. The snoot nose SD40-2 was recently rebuilt and is now designated as an SD40N.

In Sterling, CO, UP 1828 sits on the front of the Julesburg Local. This is a local that periodically runs the 60 miles between Julesburg, CO (from UP's Overland mainline) to Sterling, CO. The local picks up a bit of interchange traffic with BNSF in Sterling.

As a pair of light units make their way toward Utah Jct to head into the yard, the front half of a coal load prepares to make a reverse move to connect with the back half of the train on the other side of Pecos Crossover. And, while that is happening, a northbound BNSF manifest is headed for the BNSF Front Range Sub as well!

After uncoupling from an eastbound coal load, these two mid-train DPUs have crossed over from Bypass 2 to Main 3 in order to make their way into the yard for servicing. You can see the front half of the train in the distance, clear of the OS, on Bypass 2.

Conductor from the inbound crew has just uncoupled UP 6448 from the back half of this coal load. The inbound crew will take the two DPUs into North Yard to the fuel tracks for servicing. The outbound crew will be responsible for putting the coal train back together before departing east.

Not sure if it is just due the time of year, coming up on Christmas and New Year's, but North Yard is relatively empty at the moment! Most tracks are not anywhere near full, and several tracks are completely empty.

UP 1957 is one of two SD40Ns (rebuilt SD40-2s) that are currently serving as switch engines in North Yard. The units are both remote control enabled. A single crew member can throw switches in the yard and operate the train from a remote control box. A couple of panels are open on the long hood, and you can see a bit of the prime mover.

When it comes to older power, only about one third of UP's units were originally delivered as Union Pacific. The other two thirds are a mix of Missouri Pacific, MKT, Southern Pacific, and Rio Grande. UP 1482 was SP 7112 when it was absorbed into UP's roster. However, in this case, it was second hand to SP as well. It was delivered in March 1969 as B&O 3721.
