There is a wonderful smattering of deciduous trees between Granby and Sulphur that, in seasons other than winter, offer some nice color along this part of the Moffat. Of course, being five days to Christmas, the leaves are long gone as the westbound Zephyr traverses the single track mainline.

The westbound Zephyr is slowing for a brief station stop at Granby. The train arrived ahead of schedule, and stayed stopped at the depot until the scheduled departure time of 10:37am.

Under mostly overcast skies, the westbound Zephyr glides down the 1.50% grade near the west end of Winter Park. It is an unusually warm day, but there is still plenty of snow to be had here at roughly 9,000 feet above sea level. James Peak and the Continental Divide are in-and-out of the clouds.

In the middle of fall, the Zephyr was consistently running with six Superliners (two sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and two coaches). Once we got in to November, a transition sleeper showed up, giving the train seven Superliners. On this morning, there is actually a third coach, so the train has eight Superliners as it highballs east Leyden.

Running right on time, the westbound Zephyr approach a clear (green) signal at the east switch of Leyden. The train is crossing the grade crossing at 80th Avenue. Indeed, you can tell that the ditch lights are currently oscillating as the result of the horn being blown for the grade crossing.

In just a matter of about 40 after departing Denver, Amtrak moves from an urban scene to rural mountains. Here, about 15 minutes after leaving Union Station, the Zephyr is still in the midst of the iron jungle, passing alongside UP's North Yard (to the right) and BNSF's intermodal facility (Rennicks Yard) on the left.

Just west (geographically north) of Fox Junction, the westbound Zephyr is just about an hour late. The train is on the only track under dispatcher (CTC) control. All other tracks in the shot (in the foreground, anyway) are yard limits.

There are no houses in this shot of the Zephyr climbing the grade from Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. The question is, for how much longer will there be no houses in shots like this? The roads for the Canyon Pines Subdivision are all in place and it would seem construction of houses could start any time.

This time of year, when the Zephyr is on time...or even 10 minutes late like this morning...the shadows at Big Ten are still long enough to partially obscure the train as it climbs the nearly 2% grade.

It is a fairly windy morning, meaning it is shaping up to be a relatively mild day, temperature wise. In the meantime, the westbound Zephyr is just a few minutes late as it rolls through Arvada, just west of the detector at MP 8.4. The Denver skyline is in the distance, off to the right.
