Just 12 minutes after the sun rose over the eastern horizon, the first Winter Park Express (Ski Train) of the 2024 season charges west between Leyden and Rocky. Just like last year, this year's Ski Train consists of a pair of P42DCs, four coaches, and a lounge car (spliced between the four coaches).

Overcast skies this morning allowed for some different perspective of the westbound Zephyr (there are not in terrible light). The train is moving toward the west end of Eisele (Clay) as we look back toward Big Ten, Little Ten, and Rocky.

AMTK 51 and 61 lead the westbound Zephyr up the north side of Big Ten Curve. The Zephyr had an extra lounge car on the end when it departed Chicago yesterday. It was dropped off in Denver this morning, although the reason is not clear.

The westbound Zephyr climbs the grade on the north side of Big Ten Curve. The previous day, there was a 10 MPH slow order around Big Ten due to high winds. Today, however, the wind has died down and the Zephyr is moving at track speed.

The westbound Zephyr got stuck at Union Station for over four hours this morning due to a motive power issue. When it arrived, AMTK 816 had been leading. Before it could depart west, AMTK 816 had to be swapped with AMTK 63. Without knowing for certain, the speculation is that there was a problem with the HEP (Head End Power) with AMTK 63, so it had to be swapped with AMTK 816, allowing AMTK 816 to become the unit providing power to the train. In any case, the train is on the move and crossing over Clear Creek on Main 2 in the OS at C&S Junction.

All is quiet at Union Station, just 20 minutes before midnight on January 8, 2024. The eastbound Zephyr, which dropped off the Winter Park Express equipment here, was 3 1/2 hours late arriving in town. However, the Zephyr has now departed, leaving Union Station relatively silent, save for the sound of the P42DCs on the Winter Park Express idling. In the distance, you can see the red lights of an RTD A-Line commuter train that has arrived and is finished running for the night. Further in the distance, you can see the classic "Union Station / Travel by Train" neon sign.
