It is hard to believe that it has in fact been 25 years since Burlington Northern merged with Santa Fe to created BNSF. That's just a year shy of how long Burlington Northern existed! It was created in 1970 and, of course, became part of BNSF in 1996 with the merger. You can see the BN logo represented on the long hood of the unit, along with Santa Fe and the railroads that merged to make BN in 1970.

Finally getting clear of the sharp curves of the mountains, the Provo-Denver exists the east end of Barbara's Gulch. The train will not be able to speed up much, however, as the signal is displaying an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) aspect. The reason being that the train is taking the siding at Leyden to tie down. The crew will be picked up by a van and a relief crew will take the train in to town later in the day.

As UP 8837 comes up to "The Sag" on Main 1, it passes by BNSF's protection unit. BNSF only has four units on their coal trains there here, set up 2x0x2. That is the bare minimum for a 120-car coal train going over Palmer Divide. In the event that one of the four units fails, BNSF keeps this unit here for easy retrieval to rescue any such stalled coal load. Before they started keeping a unit here, they had to call one out of Denver, or steal one off of another train.
