The original manager of operations of the Rio Grande would be rolling over in his grave if he knew about this one! This coal empty is actually tied down on main one between the crossovers of Ironton and Springville. The crew stopped the train and manually applied the handbrake on the engines and several hoppers before a bus came and picked the up. DS-78 now has only one mainline to work with between Ironton and Springville.

Colton is the location where the Pleasant Valley Subdivision (which runs 21 miles to the Skyline Mine) breaks off from the mainline. Here, a westbound coal load has passed the branch line, running the "wrong way" on main two.

Got Power? When the power pool in Grand Junction is running a little low, UP will sometimes send "light" power west out of Denver. Here, eleven units (each no less than 4390 HP) head west out of Leyden.
