On a beautiful, clear Memorial Day morning, the westbound Zephyr has departed Denver right on time and is heading west on the main next to BNSF's Rennick's (intermodal) yard. Note Pike's Peak, clearly visible this morning, standing tall at 14,115-feet above sea level.

The morning Zephyr is backing up toward its stop at Denver Union Station. The canopy of the station is visible in the distance. On either side of the Zephyr are the commuter rail tracks for Denver's Regional Transportation District (RTD). The commuter rail is all electrified, so there is catenary over the tracks providing power.

The process Amtrak must go through to make its station stop in Denver is rather involved. Multiple tracks and dispatchers are involved. Union Station has "stub tracks", meaning there is only an exit in one direction. Consequently, the Zephyr must back in to the station. Here, the morning Zephyr is backing down the Buck Lead by BNSF's engine facility, underneath Park West Avenue. Note Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, in front of the Denver skyline.

The westbound Zephyr has just passed by a restricting signal at Prospect Jct so the last Superliner clears the switch toward the Buck Lead. A commuter rail on the G-Line glides by, also heading for Union Station. The commuter train will make its stop on Track 7 at Union station while the Zephyr will stop on Track 4.

The westbound Zephyr is crossing the South Platte River, moving through BNSF's Denver Yard on its way to its station stop at Union Station. Some BNSF light power is coming out of the yard, headed for "the house" to be serviced. RTD's N-Line Commuter rail tracks are elevated on the bridge to the right.

The westbound Zephyr is moving along at track speed at the west switch of Tonville, about 20 miles east of Denver. The Zephyr departed Fort Morgan 23 minutes late, but is making up time here and will get in to Denver 17 minutes early. The small pond at the west end of Tonville offer up a crystal clear reflection of the Zephyr as it hustles west.

A bit of sunshine breaks through the mostly cloudy skies to the west as the eastbound Zephyr approaches a clear (green) signal at the west end of Rocky. The dome car, now the Charter Club, was originally UP 7003. The open ended car bringing up the rear is the St James Place.

The eastbound Zephyr has just passed by the open hoppers that have been on Big Ten Loop for around 52 years. The train slowly descends down the 1.7% grade, taking the tracks down the final bit of elevation to the relatively flat plains.

Heading in to Big Ten Loop, passengers riding in these two privately owned "Charter" cars enjoy some of their final elevated views of the plains. In a matter of minutes, the Zephyr will be leaving the curves of the Rockies behind, and head out on to the plains.
