Yard Shots BNSF, CREX
After finding about 500 units stored in Gillette, WY and another 200 units stored in Edgemont, SD, an additional 500 or so units are currently being stored in Alliance Yard in Alliance, NE. About 300 of the units are visible in in this long lens shot. Nearly all (if not all) of the CitiRail leasor ES44ACs are currently here in Alliance.

Yard Shots BNSF, CREX
You may remember that a lot of gray and blue CitiRail leasor units showed up on BNSF a few years ago, when BNSF was encoutering a power shortage. Well, unfortunately, due to the currently economy, BNSF now has the opposite problem! A major surplus in power. Most of the Citirail units are currently being stored on a single, seemingly endless track in the Alliance Yard.

These CitiRail ES44ACs were fairly common to see a few years ago when BNSF was experiencing some power shortages. They don't show up too often anymore, so it was pretty great catching two of them on the Provo-Lincoln.

In order to clear the switch at the west end of Rollins, this eastbound had to pull just past the crossing. Fortunately, the crossing is for the railroad only, so no cars were blocked. The train here will be on the roll again in about two hours, when a relief crew would come to take the train the rest of the way in to yard at Denver.

The crew on this eastbound BNSF manifest will have to sit here on their train for about another two hours. The crew went dead (meaning they could no longer work after having been on the clock for 12 hours) just as this shot was being taken. A relief crew is called out of Denver, but won't leave the yard for another 15 minutes.

Three days ago, on Valentine's Day, this matched set of CitiRail CREX ES44ACs led the BNSF Denver-Provo west. Once at Provo, they were serviced and sent back east to Denver on the Provo-Denver. Here, the train takes the siding at Rollins.

A trio of CREX ES44ACs lead this eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest in the siding at Rollins. The crew only has 23 minutes to get the train stopped before they "die", meaning they run out of time to work. After 12 hours, train crews are required by law to stop their train wherever they are.

Three CREX leaded units lead up a relatively short BNSF Denver-Provo on this Valentine's Day evening. The train was much shorter than typical, which was actually advantageous as the engineer decided to stop near the middle of the siding (instead of the west end), allowing for a quick shot of the power.

While driving home from the store this evening, I happened to notice a westbound train in the siding at Leyden. I was surprised to find a trio of CitiRail leased ES44ACs on the point! The train was BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest and it was in the hole to wait for the eastbound California Zephyr.

With the downturn in rail traffic throughout most of 2016, the need for leased power definitely decreased. As a result, it has been quite awhile since seeing one of these CREX leasers around. But this one just happened to make an appearance as a DPU on the back of the daily Denver-Provo. I particularly like the happy face behind the cab!

BNSF was shuttling a lot of power from Provo back to Denver on this day. At least, I assume that was the case as only the first three of the eight units were actually online. Interesting how six BNSF units were sandwiched between a CitiRail leaser and a CSX unit! Behind the train (right side of the frame), you will notice a set of tracks. This is the Chem Spur which hasn't been used in over two years since Mesa Oil moved to a new location.

Both UP and BNSF manifests on the Moffat tend to be dominated by tank cars these days. This BNSF Provo-Denver was no exception. Other than a few assorted cars near the point, most of the remainder of the train is tanks.

I try to make it a point to get as many of these CitiRail leasers on film (well, electronics...but you get the point) as I can. There is a good chance that these will have totally disappeared within a couple of years. Plus, it is quite a wild paint scheme and, like most railfans, I love getting shots of wild paint schemes!

BNSF's Denver to Provo heads west on Main 3 at the west end of the Pecos Crossover. The power, which includes a CitiRail leaser on the point, was the same power from the Provo to Denver the day before. Which I happened to shoot at Leyden!
