While you will no doubt immediately see the Zephyr here at the west switch of Leyden, you might not immediately see that there are in fact two trains in this shot. The manifest visible up the hillside is an eastbound UP manifest that is waiting in the siding at Eisele (Clay) for the Zephyr.

At the west end of Rocky, the westbound Zephyr charges west on the climb on the north side of Big Ten. The Zephyr this morning is running with the standard winter consist of seven Superliners.

UP maintenance workers are dealing with a "hot rail" on the main. The westbound Zephyr is approaching, providing plenty of bell and whistle to warn the MOW workers. In addition to the work train in the house track, there is a bit of a gathering in the dirt parking lot as well.

The morning Zephyr is running about 20 minutes late today, after a bit of a delay getting out of Union Station. The train is approaching the narrowest part of Barbara's Gulch on the journey west.

Union Pacific's thrice-weekly Grand Junction to Denver manifest is taking the siding at Eisele (Clay) to wait on a total of three westbounds. The morning Zephyr, a BNSF Denver-Provo, and a UP work train are all on their way west.

A Union Pacific work train is just getting started on the work ahead. UP 6927 has pulled a few cars out of the house track at Rocky, and is going to leave a gondola on the siding to pick up some more cars from the house track.

Bright morning light shines through the trees, many of which are still holding onto their leaves here in late October. A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver rolls east on the main train, headed toward town.

Three units, setup elephant-style, are leading BNSF's Provo-Denver this morning as it rolls east on the main at Leyden. As the days slowly get shorter and the sun moves further south, the crew is contending with heading straight into the morning sunlight.

Since I am certainly no botanist, I don't know much about foliage, so I have no clue what the plants are that have changed to this fantastic bright red color just east of the east portal of Tunnel 1. Passengers on the morning Zephyr get to enjoy the color as they enjoy the journey westbound.

AMTK 25 and (Phase 7) AMTK 204 lead the westbound Zephyr out the west end of Eisele (Clay). The fall foliage here at the west end still has some good fall colors, despite the yellows not being quite as bright this year as one might have liked.

As the Zephyr heads west on the main at Eisele (Clay), note the multiple piles of ties laying along the right-of-way. UP is in the midst of a major maintenance project on the Moffat, which includes replacing a lot of ties. These are all new ties, waiting for their turn to to be installed beneath the rails in the coming weeks and months.

The morning westbound Zephyr, running right on time, has just met an eastbound BNSF manifest that is tying down in the siding at Rocky. Black and white seemed appropriate as the Zephyr makes its way through Little Ten Curve.

One of the shortest BNSF Provo-Denver manifests I've seen, comprised entirely of tank cars, is in the process of tying down in the siding at Rocky. The conductor has just set the derail and is walking back to the lead unit. If you are wondering how you can tell this is not an oil train, the lack of a buffer car (typically a covered hopper) right after the lead power is a dead tell.

MRL 4310 has been hanging out in the Denver area lately. Or, more specifically, it has made a few round trips between Denver and Provo over the Moffat. It was the last DPU on this Provo-Denver this morning...unfortunately, facing into the train. A horse grazes on some grass for breakfast in the distance.
