I do not have many shots of SD70M-2s, so it is great to pick up one more with this shot. The SD70M-2 was not widely popular, with only 331 being produced between 2005 and 2011. The majority of the units went to Canadian National and Norfolk Southen. None of those 331 units went to western railroads (UP, BNSF, etc). By comparison, over 2,000 SD70ACes have been produced and are still in the EMD catalog in 2024.

A pair of Phase 5 P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr on the main out the west end of Rocky. Meanwhile, a eastbound UP coal train (with a visiting CN unit on the rear) is starting to role east toward Denver.

Here is a shot you do not expect to see in Colorado! Amtrak westbound Zephyr meeting an eastbound coal train that has a Canadian National SD70M-2 bringing up the tail end. The blue and red contrast between the two railroads looks quite nice at the west switch of Rocky.

CN 8878 makes a rare appearance in Colorado, bringing up the tail end of an eastbound coal load. At first glance, you might (reasonably) assume that this is an SD70ACe. However, it is actually an SD70M-2. Noteworthy as this unit has DC traction motors...something that is almost never heard of on coal trains.

An (somewhat rare, these days) eastbound UP coal load is stopped on the siding at Rocky. The train is waiting on the westbound Zephyr, which is just a few minutes late and is currently between Leyden and Rocky. Interestingly, the number board on the engineer's side of UP 6942 appears to have halfway popped out of its fixture!

The last unit on UP's MGJNY is UP 2010. This unit was the 100-year celebratory unit for the Boy Scouts. However, the various stickers and whatnot that were included on the unit have since been removed.

Just east Leyden and 80th Avenue, UP's MGJNY crosses over Church Ditch. The man-made canal bring water from Clear Creek through Golden and Arvada and eventually up to Standley Lake.

Couldn't ask for better lighting here at the east switch of Leyden as UP's thrice-weekly Grand Junction, CO to Denver, CO (MGJNY) manifest approaches a clear (green) signal. This is the only regularly-scheduled UP manifest train that still runs on the Moffat.

UP's eastbound MGJNY rolls east on the main at Leyden. 30 years ago, nearly all of the houses visible in this shot had not yet been built. Leyden was "out in the boonies" back then, but is in the middle of suburban Arvada today!

Throughout the course of a year, there is obviously lots of different color in the landscape as the season change. Of all the different scenes that appear, I think the scenes dominated by green landscape and blue skies are just about my favorite. Such is the case here as the westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 1 and heads toward Plain.

The foliage has reached its peak green levels at Eisele in a beautiful scene as the westbound Zephyr passes by on the main track at Eisele (Clay). It does look like the Lounge car, third from the end, could stand to receive some cleaning and/or polishing.

Amtrak seems to be repainting P42DCs from Phase 5 to Phase 7 paint at a rate of around one every two weeks. AMTK 75 appears to be the latest to get the new scheme, second out on the westbound Zephyr this morning.
