The westbound California Zephyr departed Denver about 30 minutes late, and is about 90 minutes behind the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) as it charges west on the main at Plain. UP has a lot of equipment and stacks of panel track alongside the House Track at Plain.

A year from now, if the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) runs in 2025, there will very likely be houses in the background in this shot. For the first run in 2024, however, there is only asphalt and a few construction vehicles behind the westbound Ski Train on the main at Plain.

Just 12 minutes after the sun rose over the eastern horizon, the first Winter Park Express (Ski Train) of the 2024 season charges west between Leyden and Rocky. Just like last year, this year's Ski Train consists of a pair of P42DCs, four coaches, and a lounge car (spliced between the four coaches).

Overcast skies this morning allowed for some different perspective of the westbound Zephyr (there are not in terrible light). The train is moving toward the west end of Eisele (Clay) as we look back toward Big Ten, Little Ten, and Rocky.

The Zephyr has made it way up and around Big Ten Curve and is facing a clear (green) signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay). A cold front is moving in to the area, and the skies are overcast this morning.

AMTK 51 and 61 lead the westbound Zephyr up the north side of Big Ten Curve. The Zephyr had an extra lounge car on the end when it departed Chicago yesterday. It was dropped off in Denver this morning, although the reason is not clear.

The westbound Zephyr climbs the grade on the north side of Big Ten Curve. The previous day, there was a 10 MPH slow order around Big Ten due to high winds. Today, however, the wind has died down and the Zephyr is moving at track speed.

A CSX AC4400CW brings up the tail end of the Provo-Denver. The paint is looking very clean and sharp on the unit. A very quick way to identify this as a unit with AC traction motors is to look on the cab. The lightning bolt beneath the number indicates this is an AC unit. This particular unit went west of the Moffat a few days ago as DPU on the tail end of a loaded coal train headed for Valmy, NV.
