A dump truck dumps out a load of ballast that will be used in repairs of the track where a derail occurred last Friday morning. An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver had a truck derail on a tank car. No cars fell over, but there was some track damage. You can clearly see the fresh ballast that has already been laid. A track foreman just checked the gauging here, and is informing DS-380 that a track tamper needs to run through here before two eastbounds. Also note the flood light which has been used at night as crews have been working around the clock to get operations back to normal.

Right after the westbound Zephyr passed by, a UP maintenance foreman received track and time from DS-380 to check the train gauging at the location of a derailment here on Big Ten last Friday. You can see a dump truck showing up, ready to drop some fresh ballast.

Last Friday, there was a derailment nearby. A car with a derailed truck ran east on the main here. If you look closely, it looks like you might be able to see a flange mark in the middle of the track, offset to the west.

Due to a derailment in the area last Friday, all trains are running through the siding at Rocky. Additionally, there is a 10 MPH slow order for trains between West Rocky and (roughly) East Eisele (Clay). As a result, the Zephyr is slowly making its way west.

The truck on the derailed car ran on the main at Rocky and UP maintenance of way took the main out-of-service for inspection. As a result, all trains, including the westbound Zephyr, are running through the siding.

As this westbound oil empty exits Tunnel 3, the clouds were nice and gave way to a bit of sunlight on the head end of the train as it works to traverse through the Tunnel District.

BNSF 6386 passes by a tramper and a regulator that are tied down in the house track at Plain. These guys have been working on the main in various locations between Rocky and Crescent recently. For a few days, they were tied down on the bottom end of the Rocky Spur. The oil empty passing by is headed for the oil transload facility at Wash, UT to load up.

After getting stuck in the siding at Rocky for about an hour to wait on maintenance working on the track, this BNSF oil empty finally got the green signal to continue west. Here, the train is headed west on the main at Plain. After loading, the train will return east in a 3x3 configuration.

UP 5306 rounds the bend out of Rocky, headed toward the CO-93 underpass and Barbara's Gulch. In another mile or two, the train will be able to pick up some speed, as the part of the Moffat with the most curves will be left behind.

The only UP train manifest left on the Moffat, the MGJNY (and its counterpart, the MNYGJ) runs six times a week. West, then east, and repeat, with one day off. The train is generally feast or famine, with today's train being on the feast side with 103 cars. Many of the cars on the train are loaded coal hoppers.

From this vantage point of UP's MGJNY on the main at Rocky, you can also see the track for the Rocky Spur (or Rocky Flats Industrial Lead). The spur runs nearly five miles to the north, The Acosta aggregate plant on the north end of the spur ships by rail. Or, at least, it did...the West Local hasn't serviced the plant in several months, making it seem as though the plant is no longer shipping by rail. Note the derail, collected aligned to the derail position to protect the mainline.
