One of the more interesting units to have ever existed! B-units were tried by various railroads at various times since the introduction of diesel-electric locomotives. Such units have a prime mover and traction motors, but simply lack a cab. This means they can only be controlled when they are in a consist with another unit (or units). EMD never produced an SD45-2B (seen here); rather, Santa Fe did a conversion program themselves that removed the cab from eight SD45-2s, creating B-units. I am not sure exactly what the reason was for doing this. If anyone reading this caption is aware of the reason, feel free to leave a comment!

A trio of UP GP38-2s sit in North Yard, UP 663 kicking up a ton of exhaust. All three of these units started their lives as Missouri Pacific units. Missouri Pacific, being primarily a high plains railroad, is one of a handful of railroads that ordered some units without dynamic brakes, deeming them unnecessary for the terrain they ran in. Today, such units are almost always relegated to yard service.

This UP GP38-2 has seen better days for a number of reasons. I'm guessing that it has spent some time either in the Houston area, or in Southern California, based on the extensive graffiti. Additionally, white exhaust is pouring out of the exhaust stacks as well. In a diesel-electric locomotive, this is generally indicative of unburned diesel fuel in the cylinders, sometimes from injection timing issues. However, it is possible that it might just be the result of a cold start, and the temperature this morning is only about 25°F, so if the unit was just started, that could explain the exhaust as well.

At Terrell Junction on the BNSF Golden Sub, BNSF's afternoon "Beer Run" has nearly completed the 12-ish mile trip from the 31st Street Yard out to Coors Lower Yard in Golden. Here at Terrell Junction, the diverging route goes to the lower yard, while the non-diverging route goes to the upper yard. The conductors just threw the switch and is walking back to check sometime further back on the train.

Not a pair of units I ever expected to see individually in 2025, let alone in a lash-up together! A former Santa Fe SD45-2B and a former Amtrak F40PH are both being moved from California to Iowa. Neither is currently operational, and are being moved "DIC" (Dead-In-Consist). They will be transferred from BNSF to UP here in Denver to continue on to Iowa.

A look at the engineer's side...such as it is, considering there is no cab...of this SD45-2B. It was pretty fantastic seeing a unit wearing Santa Fe blue and yellow in 2025. Particularly a unit as unique as this one! These B-units were not built by EMD, but were modifications made by Santa Fe. Santa Fe removed the cabs and created the B-units. A total of eight such B-units were created from SD45-2s.
One thing worth noting is that some people confuse a B-unit with a slug. A slug has no prime mover, but still has traction motors with power for the motors supplied by other units in its consist. A B-unit still has its prime mover, but simply has no cab and therefore cannot be controlled unless in an MU-consist with other units.

This is quite an incredible catch that I lucked into the day before Thanksgiving. This was the very last F40PH (actually, an F40PHR) delivered to Amtrak by EMD. The units were numbered 200 to 409, and were the backbone of the long distance trains on Amtrak through the 1980s and most of the 1990s. As you can see, AMTK 409 is sporting Amtrak's Phase 4 paint scheme. After being retired by Amtrak in 2001, the unit spent years in storage in Bear, DE before being sold to BUGX in private ownership and moved to Anaheim, CA. Here, it is on its way to Middletown, IA, possibly for cosmetic restoration.
