Ever since Amtrak stop running express freight, the consist for the California Zephyr is far more predictable. You are almost gauranteed to find two engines, a baggage car, and eight passenger cars (three sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches). This morning is no exception as Amtrak hustles toward the industry at Chem Spur.

Amtrak 5 is the first of several westbounds in a parade of westbounds coming out of Denver! Rising above most of the Denver-Metro area, Amtrak is just west of Leyden on a temperate September morning. The train is running about 15 minutes late.

Three AC4400CW's are setup elephant style as swing helpers on this eastbound coal load. Once the train reaches Pecos street, these swing helpers will be cut out by North Yard hostlers. The train will be put back together and will continue east toward Kansas (and points east) on the KP line.

Nothing like sunflowers and sunrises (and trains, of course). Just before 8am on this September morning, an eastbound coal load has clear signals at Chemical. Within the next five to ten years, this location could change quite dramatically as there is talk of completing the "470" highway loop around Denver. The plans call for the highway to cross the tracks right around this location.

Don't you just hate it when your scanner breaks up at just the wrong times? I had heard the dispatcher contact this eastbound coal load and address them as "__P ___314 east" ... now, I didn't realize I had missed the leading six, and thought it might be SP 314! Alas, not that lucky on this particular day. The train is moving on an Advanced Approach signal, prepared to enter the siding at Leyden to meet four westbounds.

It hadn't happened in four years, but the Ski Train finally made another evening run west of Denver to Winter Park. The train, chartered by Train Collectors Association, departed Union Station at 3pm and 45 minutes later, it was passing just west of Denver with the Denver skyline in the distance.

A very rare opportunity presented itself on this particular day. Amtrak 6 was running twelve hours late, passing just west of Leyden shortly after 6:00am. It is very unusual to capture the eastbound Zephyr in the Denver area in morning light!

The Rocky Local is making a Saturday appearance on the Moffat line on this day. The two tank cars at the front of the train will be dropped off at Chem Spur (just ahead). The remaining covered hoppers will be taken up the Rocky Spur.

Go ahead, take a guess as to who this train belongs to! Running on UP tracks, this westbound is being led by an NS C40-9W, a CSX SD50 and a BNSF ES44AC! It is in fact a BNSF track rights train, the MPUEPVO, headed to Provo, UT. The train is just west of Leyden.

Never underestimate winter in Colorado! The only month in which it hasn't snowed in Denver is July, and March is actually the snowiest month. Snow is still falling hard in this Spring blizzard as the Ski Train heads west along Highway 72.

The Ski Train in its element! A blizzard moved into the Denver-Metro area Wednesday night and covered the Ski Train sitting down at Union Station on Thursday morning. The snow hadn't stopped as the train headed west just west of Leyden.

Now in the home stretch, the Ski Train will be able to accelerate a bit for the duration of the trip into Denver. The train is about a mile away from a transition from a rural setting to an urban setting.

Amtrak is kicking up quite a bit of snow (which is then getting caught in the 20 MPH wind) as it approaches a clear signal at Chemical, 14.5 miles west of Union Station in Denver.
