This was soon enough after the merger the BN/SF merger that unpatched units were still far more common that patched units! A westbound coal load stalled out on the main at Winter Park and this light power was sent through the tunnel to rescue it! Back in 1997, Santa Fe's Warbonnets were still in close-to-pristine condition and you can tell even in this black and white photo! Yep, it happened for a very short time between the fall of 1997 and the deactivation of most of the C30-7's in 1998 and 1999. This was also before BNSF started using DPU on its westbound manifests on the Moffat. Manned helpers would push the train up the hill to East Portal where they would cut off and return to Denver.
