An eastbound coal load emerges from tunnel 17 and passes by the old Rio Grande intermediate signal. This signal has since been replaced with a single mast on the [trackwise] north side of the track (left side of the picture).

Up until their retirement in 1999, Union Pacific would often used GP30's 3006 and 3003 as the power on the South Local and Rocky Local. Here, the South Local approaches Kalamath street in Denver headed south on the Joint Line.

My favorite Rio Grande tunnel motor growing up was DRGW 5378. Unfortunately, it was one of 16 tunnel motors to be repainted in the Espee speed letter scheme. Here, SP 5378 sits near the yard office (along with SP 5412 and DRGW 5346) in North Yard.

This picture is a bit out of focus, but it is the only one I can find in my old print arsenal with all three Grande GP60's, before 3156 was repainted to UP 5702.

One of only 40 Espee B40-8's was on the point of the MPUDV on this day in the summer of 1997. After some switching in the Springs, the train prepairs to head north to North Yard.

Shortly after sunset, I happened to find DRGW 5505 sitting in North Yard. Since I knew the SD50's would probably be falling fast, I didn't hesitate to try to grab a shot!

Rio Grande GP60 3154 sits in North Yard along with its test-striping. The white striping was applied not long after delivery in 1991 to see if it helped improve the visibility of the unit.

With the UP/SP merger coming less that a year earlier, this was still a new site to see on the Moffat in 1997! BNSF trackage rights trains heading both east and west. Here, an MDVSTJ (Denver to Stockton) manifest makes its way west on the main track at Plain.

Four unpatched units (two ATSF C40-8W's and two BN SD40-2's) lead this westbound MDVSTJ out of Plain and into Tunnel 2. This was soon enough after the merger the BN/SF merger that unpatched units were still far more common that patched units!

A BNSF manifest holds the siding at East Portal to allow light power to run around the train on the mainline. A westbound coal load stalled out on the main at Winter Park and this light power was sent through the tunnel to rescue it!

Espee 131 is about to overtake ATSF 845 at the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The light power will run through the tunnel ahead of the manifest to rescue a stalled coal load at Winter Park. This picture was taken on Ilford Pan-F (ISO 50) film.

The sun shines through to light up the nose on this westbound BNSF manifest as it prepares to enter the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Back in 1997, Santa Fe's Warbonnets were still in close-to-pristine condition and you can tell even in this black and white photo!

C30-7's on the Moffat!? Yep, it happened for a very short time between the fall of 1997 and the deactivation of most of the C30-7's in 1998 and 1999. This was also before BNSF started using DPU on its westbound manifests on the Moffat. Manned helpers would push the train up the hill to East Portal where they would cut off and return to Denver. Here, C30-7 5047 leads the way back to town just east of Rocky.
