Usually, BNSF's Provo-Denver runs with three units on the point and two units DPU'd on the back. This morning, however, the train is running with five units on the point and no DPUs. The train is winding through Little Ten Curve on the siding at Rocky to meet the Winter Park Express.

Not even 30 minutes after the sun crested the eastern horizon, BNSF's Provo-Denver is slowly rolling through the siding at Rocky. Interestingly, the train has a quintet of SD70ACes leading it east.

It is a sunny and relatively warm December morning for the first run of Amtrak's Winter Park Express Ski Train. For the first time since the Anschutz Ski Train, the regular season is starting in December (before Christmas) instead of in January.

The Winter Park Express is kicking off the season with four coaches and a lounge car. AMTK 75 and AMTK 146 are providing the power. Tickets for the train are about 50% of what they were last year, thanks to some subsidization by the Colorado government. After Christmas, two additional coaches will come to Denver to be added to the train.

The first run of the Winter Park Express meets BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest, waiting in the siding at Rocky. With the Ski Train now clear of the east switch of Rocky, DS-380 is already setting up a signal for the manifest to depart eastbound and continue in to Denver.

The Winter Park Express is throttling up as it passes through the OS at the west switch of Eisele (Clay). Note the orange bag that is covering the coupler on the front of AMTK 75. This bag is to prevent snow and ice from building up on the coupler and in the knuckle. This is because the power must run around the train at Fraser. AMTK 75 will be the trailing unit for the journey east.

Just west of Tunnel 1, the five-car Winter Park Express is making track speed as it tries to make up some time after departing Union Station 20 minutes late. It was ready to depart just as the Zephyr was arriving and backing into Track 4. Fortunately, there are no further delays to be had ahead, and it'll arrive at Winter Park three minutes early!

I had planned to chase the train further west, but when I stopped for this shot, I discovered I picked up a screw in my tire and the tire was totally flat. So, changing the tire took catching up to the Ski Train out of reach.

Just west of the west switch of Leyden, the Zephyr is headed west at track speed. Note the cars in the siding at Leyden in the background. This is not actually a train (per se), which is to say it does not have power. These open gondolas have been sitting, tied down in long term storage for a little over two months now, removing Leyden as a siding the dispatcher can use for meets.

The first P40DC that I've seen on the Zephyr in awhile, AMTK 824, showed up on the westbound Zephyr this morning. Now, in reality, AMTK 824 is now a P42DC after having been rebuilt. But it still retains its P40DC number on the roster. The two units are leading the train at track speed as it hustles west. The body of water in the distance is Standley Lake, a source of drinking water for the Denver suburb of Westminster.

Decided to go for a bit of an artsy shot here, shooting from the "dark side of the tracks". I bumped the contrast and decreased the exposure of the train, creating a bit of a silhouette shot with the Denver skyline in the distance.

The Zephyr is running on time, roughly two hours behind the Winter Park Express that came through earlier. The Zephyr has a very standard consist with a pair of P42DCs, a baggage car, and seven Superliners as it heads west between Leyden and Rocky.

As the morning Zephyr makes its way west on the main at Eisele (Clay), a herd of elk wander around in Jefferson County Open Space north of Rocky. Passengers often enjoy views of wild life on the Zephyr, particularly in the area around Big Ten.

Following about 30 minutes behind the Zephyr, a westbound UP oil train knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky. As you can see, the train wraps through Barbara's Gulch and can be seen in the distance.

Three units lead a westbound oil train at Rocky. The train has no DPUs on the tail end, so it'll have to pick up some after it loads at Wellington, UT, before it departs east. There is a bit of overgrowth on the Rocky Spur leading up the hill from the main at Rocky.

Since the decline of coal, the new lifeblood of the Moffat has, without question, been oil. A westbound UP oil empty makes its way up the north side of Big Ten Curve on a crystal clear December morning.
