This year's Winter Park Express has three Superliners with a bright pink wrap on them! Hopefully the wrap will stand out to motorists that might just see it and decide a trip up to Winter Park by train sounds like a good idea!

Under partly cloudy skies, the first run of the 2018 Winter Park Express (Amtrak's own take on the Ski Train) heads west on the main at Plain. Unfortunately, Amtrak was unable to get the F40PH "cab" unit that they had last year, meaning the power here will have to run around the train at Fraser each day before returning back east.

For this years Winter Park Express, Amtrak brought in one of their Heritage Units...specifically, the Phase 1 "Bloody Nose" unit sports a modern take on Amtrak's first paint scheme. Here, the train is highballing the east switch at Plain.

Just as the first run of the 2018 Winter Park Express passes the east switch of Leyden, the sun explodes over the hill to the east, giving the entire scene a wonderful red/orange morning glow. The new Ski Train has eight Baggage Coach Superliners for the trip.

It is less than ten minutes past dawn as the westbound Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train) approaches a clear signal at the east switch of Leyden. Downtown Denver is already bathed in morning sunlight. The tracks at Leyden still hide in the shadows of the hill to the east.

The Zephyr has nine Superliners (including four coaches, a lounge, a diner, and three sleepers) on this day. Not bad, considering winter is typically the slow season for Amtrak. It's not uncommon for the Zephyr to only have 6 or 7 Superliners this time of year. The train is about to knock down a clear signal in Barbara's Gulch, east of Rocky.

A variety of factors has caused the Westbound Zephyr to be anywhere from 2-5 hours late the last week or so. This particular Zephyr departed Chicago about an hour late as it had to pick up Superliners for the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train). It also ended up having an SD70MAC added in the midwest. With a top speed of 70 MPH, that also slowed the train down a bit. Then, the SD70MAC was removed in Denver, along with the Superliners. All told, the train is running about 3 1/2 hours late in this shot near the east end of Barbara's Gulch.

Passengers onboard the westbound Zephyr are about to dive in to their first of many tunnels on the journey west of Denver. The east portal of Tunnel One is just ahead of the lead P42DC. From looking in the windows of the Lounge car as the Zephyr rolled by, it looked like there was a pretty good crowd aboard for this New Year's Day adventure.

Unfortunately, the California Zephyr has a bit of a rough start to the New Year. The train lost 3 1/2 hours between Lincoln, NE and Hastings, NE. It was five hours late when it reached Fort Morgan, CO. Fortunately, it made up a little bit of that time, but was still 4 1/2 hours late when it departed west out of Denver.

AMTK 69 leads the westbound Zephyr through the S-Curve on the approach to the Blue Mountain grade crossing. While it is a little chilly (about 25°F), it is mostly clear and overall a nice New Years Day. Interesting tidbit...if you look closely, you will see a blue-ish building in between the Zephyr and the poles. Until March 2017, that was my office building!

As is typical, a pair of P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr west of Leyden. More often than not, it also seems that the P42s are elephant style on the Zephyr. That's not always the case, but that's the way Amtrak tends to have them setup.

Running 4 1/2 hours late, the Zephyr hustles west out of Leyden in an effort to make up some time. The delay was mainly incurred between Lincoln, NE and Hastings, NE.

Mother Nature brought winter in the correct way along the Front Range with the first measurable snowfall in months falling overnight and in to the morning. A late Zephyr approaches the Blue Mountain grade crossing on its trip west in the winter wonderland.
