Back then, the two tracks on the left did not exist at all. They were added in the early 2000s to accommodate the huge number of coal trains that ran on the Moffat back then. Then, about 15 years ago, the bridge in the background was built to take Pecos Street up and over the tracks. Here, in 2024, a UP manifest backs away from the camera and in to North Yard. Indeed, one of the only SD70ACe-T4s that actually exists in the United States. To say the EPA Tier-4 units are unpopular with North American railroads would be an understatement. Railroads are, instead, choosing to invest in rebuilding older power rather than buy these newer, more complex, and more expensive units. UP 3032 is working on backing the train in to North Yard. The manifest arrived earlier in the day from the Greeley Sub. It came across Main 2 and, now that the Zephyr is clear, will back in to North Yard. You may notice that there does not appear to be a signal over the North Yard siding. That is indeed correct. There are CTC crossovers from Main 3 to Main 2 to Main 1 at Pecos. The train briefly held in the siding at Rocky as BNSF's yard in Denver figured out if they had room for the train. The first Zephyr I shot was yesterday's 21 hour late Zephyr, which was held at Fraser for 17 hours due to extremely high (90 MPH) winds around Big Ten. The train is actually stopped just short of Lowell Blvd, waiting for a signal at C&S and continue in to the yard. If you look closely, you can actually see the crossover bent from Main 2 to Main 1. The Zephyr took the siding behind a westbound oil train. In order to keep Amtrak moving as quickly as possible, DS-78 provided a signal out the east end of Rocky. Winds gusting as high as 90 MPH in the previous 24 hours have taken their toll in area. Note the hood of the signal on the right side of the frame, blown off to the side on the face of the signal.
