A westbound UP oil empty is in the siding at Eisele (Clay). Fortunately, this particular oil train is short enough to fit between switches. The third unit on the oil train is kicking up a bit of exhaust while idling. The conductor of the oil train is on the ground to give the eastbound Zephyr a roll by, making sure he does not spot any problems. The oil train will be stuck here for two more eastbounds: a loaded oil train, and the Winter Park Express.

The Zephyr wraps through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon on its way east toward Denver. It is way more common for the eastbound Zephyr to be late into Denver than the westbound Zephyr. But this evening, the train is running right on time.

The eastbound Zephyr is running right on time as it approaches the west portal of Tunnel 1. The train just had to run through the siding at Plain to run around a loaded UP oil train that was holding on the main.

There was a temperature inversion along the Front Range this morning, and the City of Boulder is currently buried in clouds. Passengers aboard the Zephyr, heading into Tunnel 4, have a somewhat unique view of the plains.

AMTK 126 and AMTK 194 head west roughly halfway through Plain, rounding the curve to run through Rainbow Cut. Interestingly, the door on the long cab of AMTK 126 must not have been latched tight.

The westbound Zephyr is right on time as it knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Plain. The Zephyr is running with seven Superliners, but rumor has it that Amtrak plans to expand that to nine sometime in the not-to-distant future.

The morning Zephyr is running right on time as it rounds the curve toward the east portal of Tunnel 1. AMTK 203 has a very unique paint scheme in honor of 50 years of the Operation Lifesaver program. The unit seems to show up on the Zephyr maybe once a year.

The Zephyr is climbing in the fog as the clouds lay low on this Sunday morning. The yellow nose of AMTK 203 is very unique for an Amtrak P42DC.

AMTK 203, which honors 50 years of Operation Lifesaver, is leading the westbound Zephyr this morning along with AMTK 140. Low hanging clouds and snowy trees make it feel more like December rather than two days before the start of April!

Just minutes before sunset, the westbound California Zephyr, running about 40 minutes late, knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Woodside in the Utah desert. The train just passed through a 30 MPH slow order and is now accelerating to get back up to track speed.

The eastbound California Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the west switch of Sagers. Note the new signal past on the opposite side of the Zephyr. The mast has been standing there for over two years now, but UP has not yet gotten around to adding signal heads or hooking the signal up. For now, the old Rio Grande signal continue to take charge of the control point.

Along eastbound I-70, there is a very interesting Rest Area that looks over I-70 and the tracks. It makes for a great spot to get shots of eastbounds from an elevated perspective without the need for a drone. Here, the eastbound Zephyr is seen from that Rest Area. If you want to look for it, the Rest Area does not have an exit number, but it one exit west of exit 182. It is only accessible from eastbound I-70.

The eastbound Zephyr passes through some of the dirt mounds that makes the Utah desert so interesting and, in my opinion, extremely beautiful.
