Overnight, there was a light dusting of snow that fell in the Denver-Metro area. This might be the last snow of the 2024-2025 winter season, but that certainly is not guaranteed. The morning Zephyr rolls west on the main at Plain.

On an overcast and rather gloomy morning, the westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. The FRA has an inspection car (DOTX 221) on the train this morning, checking out the rails as the train proceeds on its way.

After proceeding through Eisele (Clay) on the main at restricted speed, due to an erroneous track occupancy, the Zephyr is accelerating now that it is back on a green signal. FRA inspection car DOTX 221 is in tow this morning.

After receiving authority, via PTC, to proceed past a red signal, AMTK 199 is throttling up so the train can continue at restricted speed on the main. Note the FRA inspection car (DOTX 221), directly behind the power.

AMTK 199, leading the California Zephyr, has come to a stop just east of Eisele (Clay). As you can see in this shot, the Zephyr is looking at a double red signal at the east end. There is an erroneous track occupancy between switches on the main ahead, and DS-380 is going to give the Zephyr authority to pass the red signal.

Grabbing a quick roster shot of AMTK 179 as the paint scheme actually looks quite good (and quite clean). In the distance, a BNSF oil train is tied down in the siding at Rocky.

The westbound California Zephyr has come to a stop, facing a double red signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay). There is a track occupancy on the main track between switches at Eisele, so DS-380 is going to need to flag the Zephyr by signal at the east end.

Well, this wraps up my coverage of the Winter Park Express Ski Train for the 2024-2025 season. It sounds like it has been a tremendously successful year, with the train expanding to run five days a week (Thursday through Monday). Here's hoping the train returns to be just as successful next winter. For now, the P42DCs and the Superliners will be taken on the Zephyr west to California later in the week.

As the final run of the Winter Park Express Ski Train for the 2024-2025 season makes its way around Little Ten Curve at Rocky, we see a westbound oil train that the Ski Train met at Eisele (Clay). DS-378 has given the oil train a green signal, and it is starting to pull west, out the west end of the siding.

The eastbound Winter Park Express passes through the very appropriately named Rainbow Cut. From this picture, you can probably see how the cut got its name. The colors of the rock seams nearly cover the entire spectrum of the rainbow.

Emerging from Tunnel 2, the last run of the Winter Park Express for the season faces a clear (green) signal at the west end of Plain. The train is having a great run back to Denver. It will end up arriving back in Denver about 25 minutes early.
